The Golden Compass topic got me wondering what people thought of the movie itself. And there's no real appropriate place for casual discussion, except possibly here. I, as a media brainwashed American, have always found movies and TV as a best way to get to know someone anyway!

So for The Golden Compass, was I the only one a little bit let down? It had a LOT of really cool concepts that were pretty original. But I felt like an hour into it I was still being introduced to such concepts, that never did stop being interesting. They just weren't doing much with themselves after being introduced. For instance daemons. It's like, I'm introduced to the concept of them. I love it. And...they're just sorta there. They have something to say sometimes, and they're mentioned by other people a lot. I dunno, I just wanted more out of it.

I guess that's the problem with introducing a large fantasy world in just one movie--especially one that was under 2 hours! Traditionally aren't epic movies introducing new concepts rightfully placed over the 2 hour mark, sometimes into the 3?

On the plus side, I found Lyra to be a likable character and a great actress. The bear fights were cool too. And there were about 1000 teasings to ideas and relationships that were cool, but never explored really.

i am sort of prejudiced here, but having read the books, and strongly disagreeing with their message, i will not be seeing the movie no matter how good people say it is. besides, Chronicles of Narnia was so much better as a book series, and i think probably better as a movie, too.

i would have to dissagree. the CoN are great, but they dont have the depth that HDM encompasses (hehehe, play on words)
      • Im just wondering when somebody is going to do "the Belgariad" or the Elric of Melnibone series as movies.

i mean there would have to be 5 movies... and i dont think there are that many loyal fans to support it

Sadly you're probably right. I do love the series though. It's been a while, but I wonder if one book COULD be pulled off as somewhat standalone, at least along the lines of The Golden Compass was. Good looking fantasy movies usually draw somewhat of a crowd, and if they do it better than Golden Compass or Eragon it could have people demanding a sequel.

Eragon was so disappointing, it actually made me dislike the book more after the film.

Never read the book, and really don't plan to after seeing the movie lol It looked like it would be good, but really was one of the more awful movies I actually watched all of.

I quite enjoyed the book, but the film was so stunningly bad, every time I so much as looked at the book afterwards it made me remember that terrible, terrible film.
