Now, this is kind of silly and based exclusively on drunk/stoned conversations between me and my brother.
I don't believe in shit like this, but my girl was reading to me from 'The Secret' the other day (y'know, it's that book Oprah likes), and we came across this hilarious idea:
The universe responds to your wishes. That's the basic premise of the book; they are quite literally saying that if you really wish for money it will just arrive in your letterbox.
Now, that's not what i want to debate, it's just background.
The really hilarious twist is that the universe doesn't understand 'negative' words. So (and this example is actually in the book!) if you say to the universe: "I don't want to spill wine on my dress tonight" the universe hears "I DO want to spill wine on my dress tonight - and I want to spill other things too."
Now that is bizarre. But still not the point I want to discuss (although if anyone wants to defend this rubbish that could be fun).
Okay, now New Agers sometimes hold that through 'transcendental meditation', crystals, pseudo-science and whatnot, one can become 'one' with the universe.
So here's the question, pretending that The Secret is true and assuming that New Agers generally believe in it; would someone who had attained oneness with the universe no longer be able to understand simple statements like "I don't want to get beaten up by those dudes over there"? Or would such a person instead hear "I do want to get beaten up by those dudes over there, and I want other awful things to happen to me"?
In essence, can oneness with the universe make you a really evil bastard due to the constraints Rhonda Byrne (author of The Secret) has placed on said universe's hearing?
Okay, nutters, let's go!

LOL
Interesting idea.
I do disagree with most of those New Age ideas. But I do think their could be some merit behind some sort of sense of seeking "oneness" with the universe. I don't know how literal I'd go into that, but just the feeling of tranquility and enjoying all that around you and realizing how similar and connected we all are--insignificant and size and general importance compared to everything else, yet also unique and beautiful.
As someone who smokes, you should know this! lol -
Oh yeah, I like all that stuff - 'oneness with the universe' is one way of describing it. Of course, I wasn't trying to make any point with this thread - just make people laugh or get angry.
I am especially fond of that feeling you point out - of insignificance and almost non-existence but simultaneously grasping one's individuality and 'weight' in the scheme of things.
Ah, to dream, to sleep, to toke...
