do you really believe it's as big a problem now as it was years ago?

I am thinking that it may not be as ingrained in society but it is still a problem. I would have to say that, instead of it being only limited to one race, as some believe, but to many. alot a aftrican americans boldly show racism towards the "white man" but no one is slapping their wrists for it as they slap the white mans wrists.
history is history. let us learn from it. not be doomed to repeat it.

racism is a means to power, as is the reaction to it. majorities use it as a tool of statecraft to divide electorates, and their governments use it to distance themselves from the intimidation and tyranny that racism imposes. the reaction to it is a force of legalistic and cultural balkanization, but tends not to serve the highest of influential forces. we must realize that it is all just a bid for influence over one's own region in response to another's. in practice, it is subsumed into human interaction, and will thus never be as clear cut as the opposition between rationalism and non-rationalism, not until humans are as clear cut as racists will maintain.

I think it exists on a large scale only in the minds of those who think they can promote themselves by continualy bringing it into public focus

The point is, just because you don't personally see it on a daily basis, doesn't mean people aren't experiencing it on a daily basis.

Thats true, but people get toothaches on a daily basis too, just not in a large organised way, the same with racism.

i'm a white person living in asia. i love the country i live as if it were the country i was raised in, but the difference in appearance means people have a strong image of who i am before i speak. pisses me off!

racism is a judgement of guilt based on a face, it's got nothing to do with minority or biology. "look at that idiot".

People need to Get Over Themselves

I dont understand why people hate other humans only because of their skin color. Theyre humans as well, and people shoud respect one another.

And people complain about the world not being peaceful...
If they want the world to change, people need to get over themselves and their personal issues.

Yeah I feel like everyone is a bit racist

Despite how we all feel... I know that we all have a little bit of racism or stereotypical thoughts when we see someone of a different descent or race... We will all think of something we were either taught or saw that involves the persecution, religiously, or physically of that race. Therefore I feel that we are all racist...

I have to agree with you on that. everybody prefers the company of others who are like them over those who are not. it's just human nature. so i does little good to try and "stamp out" racism when in the end we are all guilty of it, even those who pretend they are not.
  • It is still big now, and many are.

The mistake and the thing we do is We just take fact as facts and won't part with them.

Some Chinese people as I know are against the Japanese, because of the second world war and when they kill many Chinese. My parents inclued.

let me tell you a story

this actually happened to me. There was this ultra-liberal (she's white, like me) who went on a big rant about how white people owe reparations to blacks for all those years of slavery and opression. I pointed out to her what we already paid for that in blood spilled during the civil war, but she didn't buy that, so i said "well, if you feel that badly about it, why don't you sell your Volksawagen Westfalia van and give the money to a black family?" She called me a racist for suggesting this. apparently, "white guilt" didn't apply to her. Funny how good liberals are at spending other peoples money.

Hardly anyone believes in reparations anymore. Stop twisting your high school friend's uneducated guilt and indignation to be the epitome of liberal behavior.

the debate over the "N" word

there has been a lot of talk lately about making the word "nigger" illegal, at least in the medea. My concern is this; if we make one word illegal because certain people find it offensive, what will follow? will other words, such as spic, cracker, ubangi, spook, kike, hebe, honkey, chink, gook, slant, raghead, coon, kaffir. etc. become illegal, or will that law only appy to the "N-word"? If the "N-word" becomes illegal, will that law apply only to non-blacks, or will blacks also be forbidden to use it? If so, there will be a lot of rap artists who will be really pissed off, because they use that word a lot.

Me, I believe in free speech. I don't remember anywhere in the constitution where it promises anyone an "offense free" way of life. so if you can't take a little offense, maybe you should go someplace where everyone is of the same mind. Iran comes to mind as a possibility on this one. remember this little ditty i learned in grade school. "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me".

Who exactly are you talking to here? When have I ever shown signs of making the N-word, or any word, illegal? I, like all actual liberals, think censorship alone--and not making words illegal--is just silly 90% of the time. It is conservatives who flip out about the "f-word" melting the ears off our children, and "wardrobe malfunctions" making them think insane facts such as women having nipples.

Personally, I feel the N-word is extremely rude for anyone not black to use when not making a non-malicious (and clever) joke. RUDE. Not illegal. Rude. Beyond rude, really. That's one of the few racial slurs--while originally just meaning "I can't pronounce the Spanish word for black"--that holds centuries of horrid, animal-like treatment. It has taken us so long to reach equality of today, and to revert to talking down to another race with that word makes one rank among the most putrid scum of the Earth.

Aside from inciting violence, or panic (like screaming fire in a movie theater), I see no need of censoring people. I don't make a HUGE push against it as I find the taboo of "curse words" often makes them more funny and effective, depending on the context.
