Do you hold the door open for blind people?

Suppose you are walking inside and you see a person trailing behind you. It is considered an act of politeness to open the door for them. In some places, like small towns, it is even considered rude not to open the door form them. Personally, I do it only when I have the time, or if the person is good looking.

But the equation gets more complicated when you notice the person is blind. Part of you feels obligated to help them, the other part thinks you can get away scot-free. There's also that attitude some handicapped people have about being aided.

What do you do?

I've never held open a door for a blind person. I never had to. Because I usually hold the door open for everyone. So maybe... hmmm.... maybe I actually did open a door for a blind person without knowing. Anyway.

Well I think that holding a door for a blind person is not offensive for them. I mean there's a difference between that and tying their shoes for them, thinking that they're unable to do it themselves.

  • Why not?

Maybe this is just me, but I think that it is polite to open a door for someone, regardless of whether or not they're blind. Unfortunately, I haven't had the oppurtunity to hold the door open for a blind person... oops...

  • The Ability

I believe it's a simple consideration that we all might not participate in. We are all in this together you know...we are a team..so if we help each other when we can..in any way it's a good thing. And I think a natural order. To be human should go beyond the basic instinct of survival because we humans have the best ability to do so. So to think Im only holding the door open because I feel bad for someone shouldnt even cross your mind. Im holding the door open because I can. Its a privialge.

  • Aren't blind people after all... just people?

I would personally hold the door open for anyone behind me provided that the person is less than 3 minutes behind me. I don't think that blind people have a problem with other people trying to help them, I think he or she is probably just frustrated with being made out to be helpless. In either case, I don't think blind people are any different from someone who isn't.
