Reading is necessary as an adult to undo all the garbage reading that we've been forced to read as we grew up. If you mean do we read so that we can live meaningful lives, then no we do not have to read as long as we are not infected by society as we grow up. Kids are happy as hell. They are never depressed or down. They are full of life and energy. They never tire and sieze each day as if it were there last. What happens to that life? SCHOOL. The first round of infection begins with the parents who kill kid's spirits. The second round is schooling which indoctrinates the child into a "citizen". The third round and fourth are religion and society. Most kids don't stand a chance which is why they repeat the ever-ending circle. A few who have made it and are enlightened have only books to transmit their knowledge so therefore only those that read those books as adults may be able to transform their miserable life.
Do I read? I've been fortunate enought to read the right books.
