Theism And Atheism66% Voted for by UpsideDownFrown, sjrlink100.
Religion is the process of actively degrading a human's natural instinct towards progress and happiness. Where is Christianity born? In the Original Sin, a point from which all humans became born of sin that we are unable to escape. God creates and controls all things, is all-knowing and all-powerful, yet still punishes us for the sins that He evidently caused to occur in the first place. And this is the theory of religion: hopelessness, infinite despair in the light of an angry and sadistic Lord who we can never escape. It is designed to make humanity hate itself. So that it will be easier to control. So that a man will divide himself against his neighbor. So that all government will subsume itself towards this ideal of self-loathing. Atheism is the belief in humanity. It is the belief in the unlimited power of all living things, of the love of nature and each other. We are not afraid of people because of their identity. We do not fear reaching the end of the line and finding out we have been "judged evil." We live because it is worth living, not to please a sadistic deity we can never escape. Religion is fear. Atheism is love. You are free to decide.

see now, i followed you right up to your theory of religion. let's use christianity as an example. the most important, fundamental doctrine in christianity is that christ died on the cross for our sins, and that when we accept him as our savior he forgives our sins and we can look forward to eternal life. an "angry and sadistic lord who we can never escape?" what about the Lord "who so loved the world that He gave His only Son" for our benefit? many christians also have the view that God is a loving father whom we can confidently approach with all of our needs. nowhere in the bible have i read anything about hating humanity, oneself, or one's neighbor, hence, "love thy neighbor as thyself," and "any who does not love his brother does not love me." dropping the model of christianity, what about buddhism or wicca? those also promote peace, unity, and inner strength. tell me, as an atheist what do you feel your purpose is in life? why do you feel you are here? religion for me answers these questions and gives me hope, not hopelessness and fear and self-loathing. also, i don't understand your broad generalizations that ALL religious people are either self-deluded or utterly without hope and love, and that to embrace religion is to embrace hate, self-loathing, and hopelessness; and that ALL atheists are happy as a clam. personally, i know plenty of questioning, depressed atheists, and i know plenty of happy religious people living purposeful lives, and of course vice versa. so basically, i really have no idea how you can be so categorical about these two, when almost everything you said is antithetical to almost any religion, and your definition of atheism is rather partial and applies to only some atheists.

I know atheists and religious people who are sad, and ones that are happy. I don't see the necessity to bring this into the question. The reason to believe that god does not exist is this: You don't have to fool yourself, you're not perpetuating the facade that's oppressed humans for 2000 years, you're thinking freely, you're beliefs can be in accord with science and reality.November 26, 2005

Wow. Just wow. That's how I've always felt, but never been able to put it into words. Would you mind if I quoted that? I'd really like to post that on my Xanga sometime. Please register or login to comment! It's totally free
