Return to our old way's you say? That spirit you speak of hasn't been heard of for a long time. Maybe it speaks to you, but not loud and clear enough yet so it seems, otherwise you would have given at least some idea as to how to return to the source.
I'm in bit of a poetic mood, so don't take me literal please.
This is what you will want to do: Completely belief in your self. Not many ever did, so maybe in the mean time find like minded brothers and sisters on the Internet and talk it over: think together. Thus a mighty legion, never before seen on the face of the earth, will rise. This last army of men, women and children needs no leader and no course. It is driven purely by the pain of compassion that makes the blood run hot, ready to be spilled onto the earth in a final offering to the goddess of life. As you read me, the call for sacrifice rises from the earth into the hearts and minds of people; into the very fabric of society. They care not for their own life, they care not for mine or yours. Their lifes are the final offerings of a dying world to the goddess of life, in a last and desperate attempt to forge a new covenant with this earthly being of ours.
If you can read the signs you will know that this upheaval will be the signal for the Lord of the Light to come to the rescue; not to give his life for a second time, but to personally seek out the Demon that is behind the destruction of life. With his heavenly sword, that be his sharp tong and lyrics of course, he will cut through all the bullshit and mystification and expose the true nature of the beast, so that it will become known to all that this demon lives within. Upon hearing the might call of reason the beast that rules the world will have to come out of it's hiding place. That place deep inside our own hearts and minds where only the bravest amongst us ever dared to go. Into the light the beast will have to come to be judged before all man. It than will most probably be atomized into oblivion by that very light.
On the other hand you may not want to wait for judgment day. Than you could go on that inner path to find the source of wisdom you speak of. To seek out the Spirit that lives within, without whom we are indeed lost in a material world, where in the end our lives have no meaning. Listen for the perfect note that will guide you to realise that it is your mind that creates this world. That notion by itself should set you free from the burdens of ordinary man and make you master your own heart and world. Like it was in that forgotten dream. Like it was in the myth, when the Spirit was with us and we were with the Spirit.

Mother earth is simply allowing the children to play. When good old mom decides enough is enough, she will open wide and swallow the destructive forces. Life will exist but it may be quite awhile before humans get a chance to play again.

Life on this world will end if something is not done.
We could find ways to repair the damage. Or terraform another planet so that we can live on it, trash it, and move on. Or we could simply return to our old way of life.
The first option would be the most idealistic, but unfortunately, no good way has been found to repair some of the most significant damage. The second option is not the brightest, and if we do, in fact, discover intelligent life out there, we may make enemies if they're nature lovers. Trashing the universe wouldn't be wise anyway. The last option is nearly impossible. Our world is spoiled on "the easy life" many of us have now. A lot of people would go crazy if primitive societies dominated life.

restoring the earth's natural resources is entirely possible when people (americans especially!) stop living wastefully. first of all, think of how much food goes to waste at an average family's dinner table, and i'm not talking just about how much goes into the trash bin. did you know that your meat for the day comes in a portion about the size of your palm? people eat way more than they need to (obesity!!) and that's a big waste of resources. other obvious sources of waste is just the affluent lifestyles of modernized countries. i used to babysit for this family that had not one, but TWO 72-inch TV's in their house, as well as a smaller TV in each kid's bedroom. i mean HONESTLY, WHO NEEDS THAT MUCH??!!! what about the fact that arnold schwarzenegger has 8 hummers? especially considering that thousands of people around the world die every day from inadequate food, water, or shelter? it's this kind of sick, pathetic, senseless WASTE that's going to bring our world crashing down on top of us.

We can destroy human life and probably many other forms of life, but we cannot destroy Mother Earth like the Jedis destroyed the DeathStar in Star Wars. If we destroy homo sapiens, or even if we destroy all the plants and animals, bacteria and viruses will continue to live. As a matter of fact, they would have a field day. So your question is not really a fear of Mother Earth but a testimonial to your fear of species exstinction. Life cannot be destroyed on Earth. The cockroach will live forever.
