Perception like you wish?

Through the scriptures the old ones say that it is our mind that creates this world, judging by society I would have to say that we don't have a clue what that means. Now from our natural sciences we get some ideas that point in that direction; that the universe is basically a space-time manifold, where deep down in every nook and cranny strings of pure mathematics call all kinds of matter into being. I understand that in the living gray stuff of our brain neurons connect to form an inner space; an image of a world with a focus point that we call "I" I take it that our physical reality extends from here to the beginning and the end of time. I also take it that there are basically four forces that hold it all together to keep the Void at bay.

What realization prompted the old ones to suggest, without the aid of science, that it is with our mind that we create our world? How did they perceive of themselves, that would give those words their meaning? Could I still know what they knew about perception? Could they from within have come to some basic truth about themselves and their relation to the world? If so, than they did it without that special knowledge that we have access to, namely our extended base of general knowledge, that has been compiled in a period of some 500 years of unbroken methodical scientific endeavor.

Could we still make a connection between their lost point of view and our own, and would that be important?

If we can connect in such a way, could it then be put into words that speak to the heart as well to the mind? Could there be a working poetry that enables us to connect ourselves to the far reaches of the universe all the way back to the beginning of time, and make us feel our roots of flesh and blood from back then when the first humans appeared on the face of the earth? Can words ever be so powerful that their meaning lasts through the silence of the void?

Thanks for directing! Interesting. Actually, I believe String Theory is very descriptive of how some of the ancients viewed the world. The Vedas claim that "the universe was sung into being." This sounds to me, nonetheless a poetic observation, but also a very scientific one, the belief that at the heart of all matter is an essential vibration. In fact, I’m told by an old friend, who is Sikh, and very knowledgeable and spiritual, that many eastern religions believe, especially Hinduism, that the universe is constructed of two primary qualities; _light_ and _sound_. This idea is actually very akin to Einstein’s universe of energy and matter, the Hindu light being energy and the sound being matter- that all atoms vibrate with energy – and more acutely still, that all the strings that make up the matter of universe have this essential song in their heart! Pythagoras, apart from believing beans contained the human soul, had some other, rather more interesting ideas. His said famously _“There is geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres.”_ The fundamental belief that at the heart of everything was vibration – music in mathematics, song in atoms, is actually a very old idea, and only recently have scientists started to make scientific claim to it.

Dragon worrier.
Many myths have it that the world comes into being out of the 'marriage' of two fundamental qualities. Call them whatever you like: Male and female, light and dark, energy and matter, light and sound, Eros and Psyche. Through all that thoughtful poetry it becomes clear to me that we are in part driven by a want for understanding and meaning. Not just some personal 'inner' understanding through contemplation or meditation, but also a general understanding that applies to the world, where our ideas must grapple and struggle with reality and prove their value. I like to think we have a much greater potential for understanding (and compassion) than gets reflected in the many different societies. After all, abstract thought and the ability to express ideas through language and arts is still only the most recent development in the evolution of life on this planet; not counting the rise of the Internet yet. * I guess we'll have to wait a bit until Cern in 2007 is ready to restart it's large particle collider to reach the still higher energy levels that may give a better insight into those first moments after the Big Bang. Maybe we'll even get to that level of energy where the four forces (3 + 1) become unified again. Then they will be able to see what mathematics will fit the data best, in order to further strengthen our handle on reality; these patterns of light and dark. * Following some of your personal links it soon becomes clear to me that your strength is in the joining of your creative ability and your sharp reasoning. With minds like yours I anticipate a great future with a longing not unlike on Christmas Eve when I hardly can get to sleep for the promise of tomorrow's presents. * You claim 18 years to your name, but through your words and art I gather your true age is closer to a 1000 lifetimes. I hope that isn't over the top for you. ;-)
