do "good" and "evil" really exist?

is there really such thing as "good" and "evil"/"right" and "wrong"? or are those terms subjective?

  • Subjective

Good and evil are totally subjective. who gets to decide what is right and what is wrong. if you kill someone, i may think that what you did is reprehensible and wicked, but you might think that killing that person was the right thing to do.

  • 'Good' & 'Evil' or 'Division' & 'Unity'?

    A Christian's Point of View

Well, perhaps you need to look at good and evil a different way. God is holy, we are impure (because of adams fall) We were redeemed from our impurities when Christ died for us. But what is good and evil?

Good = God. That is the basis off of which I will build. Anything that denies God, hates God, disobeys or accuses God of wrongdoing, is evil.

God is the only good - nothing else is good besides him - remember that, I'm only going to say it once. If we are seperated from God, that is evil.

Because God loves us, he wants to be near us. He created us for his pleasure (remember that, too) - Not the other way around. So anything that we do to bring us further away from God is evil, and anything that we do that brings us closer to God is not evil nor good, but communion with what is good (God).

Satan doesn't tempt us to do 'bad' things, he tempts us to move away from God. God doesn't want us to do 'good' things, he just wants us to be NEAR him (spiritually) [as stated in Matthew, it is not by works that we enter heaven]

So lets look at an example - many christians would say that drinking is not a sin, but it makes us sin. This is correct in the most part, but it depends on the person. You really have to ask yourself, 'Does drinking bring me closer to God [an obvious 'no']? or Further away from God?' If it makes your relationship with God more difficult, you can bet that it is sin(evil).

Now take music for example. Does the music/lyrics bring you closer to God, or farther away from God? [Please note that the answer is sometimes neither.] With obscene lyrics, explicit content and things like that, It may seperate you from God, or it may not. With Positive lyrics and good, inspiring images on the cd cover, perhaps it brings you closer to God - or maybe not.

Once you look at things from that perspective, good and evil are just 'Division' and 'Unity'. 'With God,' or 'Without God.' Just as easy as that.

As for the code of Hamurrabbi and The ten Commandments and all of that, they were based on 'what makes life easier', or 'what makes life harder'. Following those laws has nothing to do with good or evil, although they are sometimes a good guideline to base your life on.

Of course, all of us were given an ethic standard in our hearts, although most of us are unaware of it. For example, your conscience telling you that you did something wrong, or feeling good about something you did right. This ethical standard, provided by God from the beginning of eternity, exists, and hence the saying 'follow your heart!'

  • non-existent

good and evil only exist in the opinions of some, but they are not real. there is no good vs evil, only competent vs incompetent

  • Depends

Good and evil can be the same thing it just depends which side you look at it. If you look at it in retro- spect, good and evil are mostly just words people use to condone their actions and condeme the actions of others. Usully for their piece of mind.

  • They exist but not as principals

Firstly, consider this: Hope> Faith> Charity, these are probably "the path to Salvation". Hope that, if you strive for and do what is right by your own lights, there'll be some kind of paradise at the end. Faith (not christian faith: that is only hope) is experience acquired by supra-rational means: mystical experience is the usual way of getting it. In mystical experience you learn intelligibly, you intuitively know a thing via its very essence.. then you actually know that you're actually on the right track - believe me, we'll all come to it eventually.. Lastly, Charity, I see it as only the active principle of something much bigger: Love. If I had to give a pat definition of Love, it would be this: Love is recognition of Truth. As such it's the most important thing in the universe; as such I'm willing to bet that this forms the core of God's very being, and I think that this is what we must all aspire to. And this is the punch-line: If what I say makes any sense, then it logically follows that Evil is some kind of denial of truth, wether it be a downright lie, or simply ignorance of the truth - say, for example, ignorance of a cure for an illness, or lack of compassion for a persons plight giving way to irrational violence..

  • NO GOOD OR EVIL

of course there is no such thing as good or evil person. I think that there are certain actions which are consisdered by the majority of society to be wrong, like rape or murder, but that's about as close as we get. Everyone has a slightly altered perception of the world based ont ehri apretns, how they were raised, childhood experiences/friends, all that stuff. I mean to some people, for example, doing drugs makes one a bad or evil person. To others, doing drugs is just fun and they see no wrong in that action. Personally, if you want to know, i think all peeople are basically good enough (differeent from jsut good). Sure i think man is inherently selfish, but not inheriently evil.

  • Balanced

No one is purely good and purely evil. Have you ever seen the movie CRASH? The main point is exactly that. We are just people, doing right and wrong. There is no concrete 'good' and 'evil' - only a balance.

  • Thought

I believe society as a whole determines what is "good" or what is "evil" even though the individual has some control over to his/her personal feelings and ethics,in the end it is society whom decides. Of course we have authorative figures that hold these thoughts of society to enforce them, mold them into whatever reason and form they wish.

So do not ask what is good and evil, ask why good and evil, why society, why us?

  • Scare tactics.

Firstly the concepts of good and evil are man made, they are directly linked to the morals people were bought up with. For example: Western civilisation would consider a family sitting at dinner with a monkeys head through a hole breaking the skull with small hammers and picks and eating its brains while it screams to death is "evil" or even just plain old wrong. Families in poorer countries, India to name just one, have been bought up with traditions such as the above and find it to be acceptable. So how can one thing be evil to some and good to others. Simple. Because good and evil doesnt exist they are man made concepts, mostly likely made by some religious wanker to place fear in peoples minds because if you dont do what god says "its evil." Control and scare tactics, nothing more. But then again i dont even believe there is a meaning to life.

  • Order and Chaos

I don’t believe there is Good/Evil, only Order and Chaos… I believe Good and Evil are merely terms society came up with to govern rule… I believe God is the totality of Order or Good, and Satan would be the totality of Chaos or Evil. Just my opinon.

  • better question

taking this in the litteral sense, if you wish to know if they are real, take them indepenently. can the world survive without evil? can the world survive without good? or can it survive with both?

if you ask me, no, there is no such thing as good an evil, only a spectrum of grey. all based on POV
