America and Nudity, what is the big deal!

All throughout Europe, nudity is not seen as anything "wrong" or immoral...in fact it is widely accepted and seen as normal. Why it is then that America treats nudity as if it were some sort of taboo?

  • it's not a body anymore

nudity has been bastardized by american culture. (like most aspects of humanity). the human body has been exploited and perversed so much that now it represents those perversions. morality has nothing to do with a body. but sex and control and money are mixing into one big punch bowl. we're drinking out of it and becoming jaded and poisoned by the mix. beauty has been kidnapped and beaten away from nudity in american culture. they dont appreciate curves and shapes and sizes. they want plastic breasts and collagen lips. they want hairless men and oiled muscles. americans dont see the body as a beautiful tool that we have to make contact with the rest of the world, they see it as a tool to get money and power and feed thier insecurities.

that's what's wrong with americans' perspective on nudity.

  • Excuses to make History

One of the reasons behind America claims that nudity is bad is that nudity will have a bad effect on the children in our society, promoting immorality and chaos, but lets face it all they are doing is stalling the inevitable (children seeing naked ppl) and sheilding them from reality, which in my opinion is RETARDED!

Why do they have this point of view in REALITY?

In my opinion, it is because America needs to prove itself to be a "Better" country. Europe is filled with old cultures and countries with hundreds of years of history back-up, while America is a relatively new nation. I personally think that we are trying to set ourselves apart from Europe by setting our own set of rules pertaining morality. I think it's a stupid reason, but unfortunately, if you look at it deeply enough using a psychological point of view, you'll see it's the most probable.

Nothing is wrong with nudity... nothing is wrong with ANYTHING. Once you realize that not even killing is a "bad" thing will you be able to understand what I am saying.

I say religious / traditionalist and perverted mindsets are the main reasons why nudity is viewed as wrong. Nothing too complicated. America is a prude and perverted nation at the same time. They are the greatest bible thumpers, as well as the greatest porn-watchers on earth (facts). Bible thumpers and porn-watchers both view nudity as sex. So the first will see it as the embodiment of the devil, and the latter as a good sex show. It's just plain fanaticism. You can either be a fanatic of virginal ways or of overtly sexual ways. There is no dominant middle of these in America. That's why they're so obsessed with nudity.

  • You can't separate sexuality from innocence in nudity
Nudity does have its beauty (obviously) and can be innocent. However, humans on a whole cannot seperate nudity from sex. While some may have the purity of mind and heart to view nudity as natural and innocent, they are in the minority. Even if one wanted to view nudity with innocent eyes, it would not be long before our sexual desire came through. If women were more nude, even the more decent men would eventually lock their eyes on the breasts and other parts, bringing their attention to this woman's body, and not her spirit or mind as reflected through her face. It will be a long time before humans may be able to treat sexuality and the naturalness of nudity separately. Until then, decency helps keep us from the degredation of society resulting from sexual immorality.

  • Though nudity is attractive, yet it is Forbidden

First of all, all the religions forbid us to get nude as well as to look at others when they are without dresses. Actually, ndity arises sexual feelings in man and it becomes very hard to stop oneself. Secondly, if we see everyone without dresses, especially the older people, the feelings of respect may grow less, I think.

  • Nudity should be private

I don't support public nudity or nudity on TV. I'm not a prude however, but there is alot of perverts out there. Also I dont want everyone to see me naked, I'm not ashamed of my body I'm actually quite proud of my body but I think that nudity should be private, intamite. Shared with someone you love or someone you don't love but are sleeping with.

  • Ancestry
It's interesting how America, a country we think of as relatively advanced, is such a holdout when it comes to nudity. I suppose it must have some root in our ancestry- look at the Puritans, for instance. Whereas, even years ago in Europe, nudity has been celebrated in art. Americans simply do not have that background, which doesn't help at all.

  • I agree

I completly agree with what you are saying. I see how people think how exploiting your body is wrong, but you are right us americans get way to worked up over nudity. I myself am even that way, I hate being nude. It disgusts me, but its true we need to get over ourselves. Be proud of what we have(or in the words of christians, what god gave us). ♥Kate

  • My thoughts

I think our obsession with nudity is making seem bad. We were blessed with our bodies ,by who ever, and forcing us to cover them makes us ashamed of what we have as if it is supposed to be hidden unseen that it is wrong. I think if we accepted nudity we would accept other body types besides the stereotypical beautiful ones. and not all americans are fat i'm thin and eat like a pig i'm just active.

  • I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU

I am European, and it has been almost three years since I moved to the US. Personally,I don't understand why nudity is bastardized by the American culture. Ohh, and it's not only that. If you read a book talking about love...many people would say "why do you read porn". Oh god, we are so different...and yet I like that we are different. Because everyone is unique in their own way.

  • Some things don't need to be shared...

Unless you grow up in a culture where nudity is the norm (such as some Aboriginal tribes), you will likely not feel comfortable walking around naked in front of family and strangers. Those that do feel comfortable in that environment can and do join nudist camps.

For the rest of us, clothing is both functional (sometimes it gets cold or hot or rains), and necessary in a civilized society. Just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it needs to be shared with everyone. Having a bowel movement is "natural" too, but please don't decide you want to share that with me too.

I am perfectly comfortable with my body in the privacy of my home and with my significant other. I feel no need to display it for others. And even though several folks have commented that Europe and Britain and other countries are "less uptight" about nudity, I suspect most of those countries have laws about public nudity. Yes, I know about the topless and nude beaches, but I still doubt that a naked man or woman walking through the streets of Paris or taking the Tube in London would be looked at by others as "perfectly normal".

If we could separate nudity from sex, perhaps things would be different. Frankly, some of the styles that people wear leave little to the imagination. From the over-exposure I see on the streets and television and in magazines, it doesn't look as though America has a problem with sex and nudity. While I don't advocate going back to the repressed Victorian era, I would personally be glad to see a little more modesty.

  • rather sad.
plenty of others have covered this topic rather well, but i just had to add my two cents in. i have never had shame. when i was a toddler, i was the kid that would walk to the next table in the restraunt and lift my dress to my chin as i smiled and said hello. luckily for me, my mother was a "hippy" type, and taught me that while nudity is in no way wrong, i have to be polite and caring of other peoples beliefs. as i have grown up, i have strengthened that belief, and now spend every minute im not outside naked or nearly so. i am often naked in front of friends that i know dont see my nudity as a sexual thing, but if it bothers someone, or they cannot get past the sex aspect, i cover myself. i have two children, a 3 year old son, and a 1 year old daughter. we often all climb into the tub together, and splash and play. my son has never given a second thought to my nudity, beyond occasionally asking why his sister and i dont have a penis. personally, i dont see anything wrong with this, but sadly, soon ill have to start thinking about wether or not its appropriate to be naked around my children in todays society. while i would never ever hurt my children in any way, i can only imagine the uproar it would cause if my son were to suddenly say in school, "me and my mommy take baths together, she has breasts." here in america, that could be considered child abuse. i also wonder what age ill have to start bathing them seperately. they love bathtime so much, it makes me sad to think about having to seperate them, but again, while i dont see anything wrong with it, others will. i often wish i lived in another country where the naked body is not so objectified.

  • i'm american, and i like seeing naked people

i like seeing naked people, especially females but lats be honest, most americans, and I include myself, are fat and flabby. It comes from too much red meat in our diets. My point is... does anyone really want to see naked Americans? europeans are in better shape, they eat better, less fatty food. so it's nice to see then naked, but we American look like beached whales when we sunbathe.

so thats why we cover our bodies. we are ashamed of what Shamus we have become.

Americans cultural evolved* this taboo so that we wouldn't have to see our obese citizens naked.

No that's a cruel joke. But I wonder why we're so fixated on violence. I think you can only see a Penis in an R movie if it's a castration scene
