Emotions and Language, How they Mix

Which dictates which? If you speak a different language, does it affect how you feel about things?

  • English is not my first langauge

Me and my fiance constantly have clashes about feelings and such. Now here's something I realized. I've told people "I love you" family even, though I've never said it in Chinese until recent... Somehow the words in my native language hold more weight and value.. more MEANING than in English. Not that I don't understand what those words are suppose to mean. Instead, it almost seems to just symbolize or "stand for" things, and isn't quite fully defined in English. Things just seemed to get lost in translation. What do you think?

  • It depends on the language...

Just for example, I am perfectly bilingual (French and English) and there are certain very big differences between emotional expression in these two languages. In French, there is no distinction between "like" and "love"... Isn't that crazy? If I wasn't bilingual, that could cause a lot of confusion... I think that the emotions don't differ from language to language, only the ability to express them.
