Is it possible that Government has corrupted Religion and not vice versa?

Recently I listened to a colleague of mine explain that it isn't religion that has corrupted the government, but that it is government that has corrupted relgion. Now my colleague is what he calls a "follower of God." I don't agree with him on a lot of religious beliefs, but he did make a good point - the term "Christian" has become something many Americans use to manipulate a sense of ethics. In essence, he says his religion is completely misrepresented and gave me many examples and then showed me many exerpts from his religious text. Now, as I said, I disagree with him about many religious ideas he has, but to be honest, I do believe America and the government have completely skewered "Christianity" to meet their own opinions...raw Christianity, as written in their Bible, runs counter to many assumed opinions on the religion...what do some of you think?

He has a really good point but i will refer to history to set my stance. years and years ago, the church was the dominatent power in the lands, most people know this. i believe that in the sense of one corrupting the other, religion first corrupted the government. this is proven by the way governments hold fast to religious beliefs (ie homosexuality), but in turn, the government also corrupted the church by the church having alterior motives as you rise in rank of each religion. i would say it is fifty fifty.

  • you both have good points

really and truly there two sides to everything! and this concept most definitely swings both ways. the dead sea scrolls(in most instances of religion) were interpreted which first created the church then the church created government structured by laws whos most basic origins are the commandments. in acient tribal times murder wasnt exactly a crime, it could be justified, they lived by magic not law and religion. being that everyone has their own prejudices and translating acient text and dialect into modern english, spanish, and various african languages, would require the translater to improvise with their own prejudices where it was "necessary" so it could be understood. this would be where the confilct comes in, and kingdoms and nations are devided due to difference of interrpretation...i.e., democrat or republican, christian or catholic.

in conclusion: with religion being the mother and father of politics and government, who first ruled and governed. those children of faith (politics and government) become the greedy children who grow and with the fading of their parents(religion) exploit and use them for all there worth since now in such an old age they have no actual power in the governing aspect. so it goes both ways.

have you noticed that more and more people are turning thiest?
