Why do people feel the constant need to compete with their friends to reach perfection in their minds through their academics, music or sports?

  • Friends are closest to you

Some people simply like to compete. i compete with everyone and everything, and friends are people who you spend alot of time with and are close to which makes them the easiest people to compete with. Also, most people feel a need to do everything in their power to have respect of those close to them.

  • Ego & social acceptance

There is a need to keep up the minimum standard on which your friends would accept you as one of theirs. They have their ego and their self-esteem to maintain. Nobody likes to be a failure. That consciousness keeps people going. There's also personal esteem to take care of. It's from the subconscious. The will to be the best. The inner desire to be totally accepted & being better than others, since humans are social beings, keeps the competition going.
