This very common, yet difficult question is not expressed in your typical philosophical form. It's more stated as a fictional "poem", but meant to incite the same degree of thought. Responses and comments are more than welcome!

The Philosopher's RoleVoted for by monimac.
He approached me one day, out of the blue. Merely tapped me on the shoulder, and asked a simple question.
At least I thought it was simple then.
But now, through experience, I've come to understand the philosopher's role. After years of subconscious contemplation I have grasped the reason. What he required from me wasn't an answer, neither immediate nor future; he only wanted to inspire thought.
It took me half my life to find the answer to his question, and the other half to realize that he never wanted an answer.
Would I have devoted so many years to reading and thinking and educating, had he not asked me that seemingly simple question on that unsuspecting day? Would I have ever known what I now know and never would have known, had it not been for this "curious" man?
I doubt it! And so, in taking on the philosopher's role, I leave you with this question -
What's your name?

But is all really in a name?Voted for by XxxblondettexxX.
yes, i see your point int his case. I know about numberology and I know enough your not talking about that. that simple question has so much to say. it cant be just all in a name, it cant. there is so much more within just one person. it seems as if you cant answer the question in a straight way, eh?

I am....Voted for by Aidenn.
There is no point, truely, in a name. It is merely a way to be classified and become your own unique person. However, the name is truely only a title. No one has the right to say, "Your name is this, so you have to do that in your life". Whoever says this, is completely and totally wrong. A name should not rule your life. Numerology is all very fine and good, whatever...I don't care. Who would? All numerology is truely is the combination, made by a common man, of numbers that make up your name. By adding, subtracting or whatever with said numbers, this is supposed to classify you. There's some definition behind each number. However, if one is truely a Christian, then they cannot believe in this. You cannot serve two masters, and if you believe what you figure out with man made numerals, you cannot believe that God has set a role for you, no matter what your name may be.
I am Holly. I am proud to be me. I am a woman, and welcome the changes of becoming an adult. I am me, and no other. I am out to prove that I don't have to have a name to be the person I am today. ~Holly

A mere name
Well, yes, it seems so simple yet it makes you think so intensly. It means more than what it really is. Not a mere simple question. I think represents who I am. A name does not tell you what kind of person you are, but what you are called by. My names angel, but other people have the same name, does this mean that is what they truly are? i think not, it is just a mere name, nothing more. Please register or login to comment!
