By which, I mean...does our mental state truly affect our physical state?

I for one think it has a VAST impact, for reasons as shown.
1. You see a little child running. They trip and fall as small and clumsy children are wont to do. They sit on the floor, and no tears appear. They look at their hands. If there is blood, they immediately begin to howl. Now, bear with me, for I still remember this state. I often found that my cuts hurt more when they were bleeding. (I found this interesting (the blood as well as the information (woo, brackets in brackets in brackets) so thought I'd tell you.)
2. We often wake up from dreams (our subconscious state) feeling the way we did in the dream. For instance, the other night I dreamt I was being smothered by a gigantic blob of jelly (well, it looked like jelly. Grey jelly, if you're interested) and woke up still feeling as though I couldn't breathe. Assuming the dream wasn't real, it affected my physical state. I could not breathe. (for a few seconds) The same can work for falling dreams. You wake up feeling as though you're still falling.
3. People who are hypochondriacs are sometimes given hypochondriac pills, or spectacles. These, for those who don't know, are pills which have little or no effect on the body, and spectacles made of clear glass. The patient thinks they are having an effect, therefore they feel better.
4. I tested this on a friend. *giggles* My friend always said that a certain type of fruity drink made her really, really hyper, and certainly, whenever I gave it to her, it worked. She would giggle madly and be unable to stop, once even making herself ill. However, I put some of this drink in a different bottle, and IT DID NOT WORK. She remained calm, she just took a mouthful then passed it back to me. Now, that's strange. Normally, she's half-hysterical after a sip. A mouthful would have her ricocheting off the walls! (figuratively speaking) I also did the opposite. I put a similar fruity drink (one she had had before and NOT gotten hyper on) into the bottle of her hyper drink, and she went WILD. She giggled, made a total prat of herself. But it wasn't the right drink! It was a placebo!
If you've gotten all the way down, I would LOVE to hear your response. Have I converted you? What are your opinions? Is life what we make it?

Maybe but...Voted for by colins573.
If this whole reality creating thing is true then couldnt we destroy it as well?!?!? I dont believe we do create our own reality, just create ourselves!!! does anyone agree that choice is the basis of what we create. For example we choose to follow God... creating ourselves to be more rational haha and loving.
INTERESTING THAT WE DONT HAVE MUCH OF A CHOICE OF THE REALITY WE ARE IN
oh yea and in the comments i like what the doctor had to say about it. made since to me

Aye-
Yes, I agree with you. I think we do create our own realities. No need to give examples, you've come up with a few good ones of your own, and we all know some of the really popular ones. If you have not already heard/seen it, I suggest the movie "What in the Bleep do we Know". It deals with Quantum Physics and the fact that we DO create our own realities.November 28, 2005

love it
you are completely right. i think. but hey, maybe this was jsut a part of the reality i created for myself, and so of course in this reality i would agree. also, i agree with emo-tech regarding the 1st point. however, as children, i defy someone to disagree with the fact that children play pretend and create their own realities. this is because as adults we are inhibited. im going to go play dress up now. bye (lol)December 7, 2005

Pros and Cons
As examples of how our mental states affect how we feel and what happens to us your examples barely scratch the surface. Dr. Andrew Weil makes a good point that the placebo effect can actually be very powerful. Yet remember that drugs that are tested against them have to be even more powerful in order to have a proven effect. On the other hand this doesn't lead directly to the conclusion that mind is all-powerful over matter, nor to solipsism. In one of your examples above, about having trouble breathing and then waking up, breathing problems while sleeping are actually quite common. It has been scientifically recognised that difficulty in breathing can cause nightmares, and even very similar ones. Sleep apnea, and narcoleptic tendencies seem to have a strong relationship to dreams of alien abduction. Similar fantasies have been occurring for hundreds of years, see Henry Fuseli's painting of the Nightmare and Incubus. Creating our own reality has two parts, change from inside ourselves that affects ourself and our experience, and actual physical manipulations of matter through art and technology. More power to you in creating your reality.December 8, 2005

It depends
I guess it depends on the person, it is ture, to me it seems that peoplee have the ability to create their own "reality" when it comes to that drink thing you were talking about, it sort of goes with this movie called Matchstick men, (nickolous cage) where he had really bad OCD but and ran out of pills and his normal doctor wasn't there so he went to another doctor and the other doctor gave him a placebo, not knowing that it was one, he was completly cured, that is until he found out the were sugar pills, then he went wacko again. So it just goes to show you that people have the ability to believe what they see, not what they know. Like, even when it comes to pretending, there is this saying "If you think that you'll never be happy, pretend you are, before you know it, you will be" so it all depends on the person, some are just fooling themselves and manifesting their own illness or what have you, while others turly don't bennift from placebo's in other statistics. Some deperessed patiants have been givin placebos and they felt worse, then when they were handed the real drug, they felt better. Its all in the psyche! Please register or login to comment!
