Is the Universe Infinite

Of course it is, if there were a stop there have to be something on the other side, and if that had an end, that would have to have another side also. So, it is easy said, that the universe is infinite

  • Our finite world, Trancedental Idealism, and Dark Matter

Our existence is rooted in the finite. Every spatial and temporal object that we have experience of has a beginning and an end, or at least finite boundaries. Our very lives are destined to end – a fact that we are extremely familiar with. Modern experimental science argues that there are more dimensions than three, and that our reality is a “shadow” of a fourth dimension. Some say that this dimension is Time. These theories attempt to show a finite universe that curls back into itself after the fashion of our globe, but in another dimension; and in this universe we are thus inextricably bound, simulating infinity after a fashion. But why do such “radical” theories exist? It is because the human mind cannot actually grasp the concept of infinity. Everything in our experience ends.

To further complicate things, take Immanuel Kant’s theory – which I am loosely familiar with – that our perceptions act as a screen on reality, actually imposing our conditions onto the world we experience. While this may have just been a convoluted way of bringing together rationalism and empiricism, is it possible that the universe is finite because we experience it that way?

My opinion, which I cannot truly justify, is that time does not exist and space is infinite, though matter is finite. However, I have heard theories that space is actually composed of “dark matter” that is constantly expanding. Who knows?

  • We'll never know

If the universe is infinite then we could never prove it to be so. It would always be logically possible to find the end just a little bit further on… and who knows, if we did find the end of the universe, would we know it was the end? or would we perhaps just keep on going into it and then cease to exist ourselves all non the wiser?

  • Finite amount of matter

The universe formed out of a finite amount of matter. It is expanding. Eventually it may collapse in on itself or it may expand forever until the solar systems are all infinitely far away.

  • infinite...

personally i think the universe is circular…if you start at earth and keep going to the edge of the universe you will end up back at earth because it is a loop. i also have a theory about the other far off galaxies being our galaxy at different times. i know it sounds ridiculous and out of space so to speak but that is what i believe and it is highly possible…seeing as we don’t know what really is out there.

  • Olber's Paradox...

If the universe was infinite, then there would have been an infinite amount of time for the light from all the galaxies to have reached us. We know this is nonsense by looking up into the night sky - it's very dark. If the universe has existed forever, and goes for forever in all directions, then all the light from all the stars in this 'infinite' universe would have already reached us, and the night sky would be white.

Also, the universe is expanding, we know whis through Red Shift etc, the speed of light (and i know Einstein wont like this) might even be speeding up, suggesting a constantly changing universe, which all came from the singularity during the Big Bang, suggesting finity. (i like this word, even if it isnt one quite yet)

Also, if the universe was infinite, wouldn't everything have already happened?

    Just a thought.

  • can't be

I think it is doubtfull that the universe is infinite. This is mainly because, if the universe were infinite, then there would be an infinite number of planets, and therefore an infinite number of planets with life on, and an infinite number of planets with inteligent life, and an infinite number of planets with inteligent life that has made contact with our planet.

Instead, if you go back to the big bang, when everything in the universe was at one single very small point, and you travle at the speed of light (the fastest possible speed) in all directions until you get to today, that would be the edge of the universe, nothing can get outside of it, simply because nothing can travle fast enough. This also would explain why and how the universe is expanding.

  • Ouch

My brain is trying to figure this out…it lost real bad. Umm…infinity…if a monkey sat banging on a typewriter for infinity, than he would write all of Shakespeare’s plays in order. That’s infinity. Of course, this does go against the logic of infinity, because I just put a rule on infinity, that the monkey would have to bang at a typewriter…but that wouldnt work because in infinity anything is possible, but i geuss that if monkeys and typewriters exist, eventually, they would bump up to eacthother…askhsgk

  • Definition

Why do we call it a universe if it’s not infinite? To say that the thing that encompasses us all is one makes it infinite. I personally believe in many universes (id est multiverses). The thing that encompasses all of the multiverses may be infinite, and if it’s not, who’s to say that there aren’t hundreds upon thousands upon millions upon billions (insert more and more numbers here) of those things, which encompass more multiverses, which in turn, hold galaxies, solar systems, planets, suns, stars, moons, and even… people? I think that if you deny the infinity of a universe, it’s time for a name change.

  • Confusing topic

This topic always gets me confused, because I learn one thing in science that makes lead to one comclusion, and then i learn something totally different. I am not sure what I think about this topic, all I cans ay is that after awhile it can get afully confusing. As of right now I thing that it isn;t infinite, but like ShadowDion says, is still expanding, and one day will become so large that it mass will become infintily heavy, and will collapse upon itself and become a black hole. • Finity is Necessary

God made the universe infinite as a reflection of himself. I hear this so often and because I do not think there is a God I cannot see such a reflection working. It is said that nothing is created nor destroyed. Now if the universe is consistently infinite there would be no proof of it. All there can be proof of, is finity. It is in our life that finite things exist. If you look at all things in our existence they are all finite substances.

It is not entirely contradictory for a finite thing to have an infinite existence though. Take for example matter itself. It is never destroyed, it lasts forever, or infinitely to use the pop word of this topic. It is possible that the universe is finite in the sense of its material and infinite in the sense of its duration.

I bring this up becaus I feel there may be a belief that infinity is something else other than what it is. Infinity is a man made concept used to describe something that does not end, such as generation. Although things die, nothing is lost. The person’s life is lost yet all matter maintains. Whether a soul leaves or not is questionable (I do not think so personally). But in the end nothing is lost. In the sense of the timespan of matter it is limited. Yet in terms of how much of the universe is, it is limited.

  • Yes, and no

The answer is NEVER simple "PsychoZach". The answer is as well VERY simple. Something must begin when something else ends...and so on and so forth on and on forever. Many things, even the human definition of the Universe will end...but something must begin at it's end. Nothing is infinite, but EVERYTHING is infinite.

  • Brief Opinion

In this poem Initial Space-Time Alternators' I tried to sketch two versions of the beginning of this universes (which may be just one amidst a large number of multiverses-a physicists named Tegmark wrote about that.

  • Stupid question......yawn....

Hmmm.... is the universe infinate... good question. Now i got a question. do you think there's a big brick wall where the universe stops?i mean be real for a second tell me what stops it from being infinite? certainly not you or me? and if it wasn't where would it stop at?

  • Up for opinion

I can say one thing the mirror theory is a good, one, and if you think about it everything is infinite, ultimately we only know the world as we've made it, there is so much we dont know, and havent seen, there is no one answer. life is infinite, before you are born, fetus, sperm, it goes on, something cant come from nothing basically. after you die, your body is eaten by whatever, bones stay and who knows, before this earth there could have been another civilization in our solar system...Too bad we cant travel through time

The universe doesn't exist. It solves everything. If we can get over the fact that we don't exist, we cease to exist in our minds because we don't have minds, if that made any sense. The universe is the same way. It's not real.
