Can we please feed America first?

It has baffled me for years that we can feed the starving all over the world, and complain about it here at home. Lay it out, tell me what you think. Thought need not be guided by the mind alone, so feel free to vent!

  • How does it happen?

Have you ever sat in a mall? Just sat there, watching, and listening to humanity passing by, to Life going on around you? If you haven’t then you don’t know what you are missing. Seriously. We, as humans, tend to ignore humanity. I mean, how many of us can say we REALLY pay attention when those starving kids come on television to let us know that, for the price of a Latte, we can feed them for a month. I don’t, but then, I have an honest reason. You see, while you may look at these commercials with dismay, and a bleeding heart, I am ever the critic. And I have discovered the real reason for such commercials to exist. We need them. That’s right. Humanity needs them, though I’ll admit some of us need them more than others.

You see the truth is this; we put the commercials out so that children can starve. “WHAT??!”, you say “Not true!”. Actually it is.

Here is how it plays out. A 38 year old telecommunications flunky is watching television late at night while his marketing executive wife, and his 2.4 kids are asleep in their beds deep within their 6 bedroom brownstone. Daddy just got another raise but can’t shake the feeling that he has missed something, when all of a sudden, WHAM, a little, starving African boy named Saggi, or something, is on the tube. Right there in his living room is his shot at redemption for the price of a Latte. Of course he will sponsor a child! Oh, AND you take plastic? Oh, AND it’s a tax write-off? Please let me sponsor 2!!

And on his way to work the next morning, he won’t even notice that woman asking for change. Won’t notice how threadbare her clothes are, or how they just kind of hang, somewhat lopsidedly. And you know he’s not going to notice that, right here in America, 6 blocks from home, 50 feet 17 floors down from his office, 2 small children are watching their mother, praying that she comes back with enough money for the toast.

And he won’t have to because he’s done his part. He has saved a life, allowed a child to live. So he has to throw away an extra piece of mail on holidays.

And he even gets a Latte.

  • why do we deserve special treatment

Why do people in America deserve food before other people? Why don't we as Americans just quit getting fat as hell and take care of starving people on a personal level. If you've ever been out of the country, you'll see that there aren't fat people in that many other countries, at least the ones I've been to (Germany, Czech Republic, India, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Poland, the Netherlands)

  • We should be grateful

Although i am not from America, i feel the need to comment on this issue. I believe you are very lucky to come from a rich nation like America, where their is food, running water, shelter etc. I’m from London (England) and both of our countries are similar. We all take our life for granted and although their are people who are starving in our own countries, their are orginisations and shelters to help them. Whereas in areas like Africa, South America, areas effected by the tsunami like: Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka are extreamly poor and have bad lives unlike the western world. thank you.

  • My Question

I just don’t see why we feed all these countries that terrorize us. I mean it’s like telling the other countries of the world that if they come over here and do something wrong then we will go over ther and feed them. I mean where is the sense in all of this. You would be suprised at how many other ppl in other countries really don’t want our help either.

  • Why America first?

The hungry of America aren’t anywhere near in as bad of condition in other countries. Those places people use the same stagnet water as a bathroom, laundry room, and bathing area. Even the homeless, foodless in America have somewhere to go, if they want it (you’ll be surprised, but many don’t want to be given stuff).

  • Why?

People in america are poor, rich or middle class by choice, not fate. This is the greatest country in the world simply because we all have the same opportunities and freedoms. The american lifestyle is about actions and consiquence you can't tell me that someone who refuses to work is unfortunate. Take my next door neighbor, He had a good job decent appartment and is now being evicted and has no money because instead of pulling himself up by the bootstraps, looking for another job and being resposible he, decided to lock himself in his appartment and become a lush. Now tell me is he unfortunate. No he has to suffer the conciquences of his actions.

  • America is top priority.

If we as americans want to actually unite and be as great a country we have been, we do need to take care of our own problems first. America, in my opinion, is the linch-pin of the world. If we fall and die because of our inability to take care of ourselves, what kind of hope can we give the rest of the world? I agree, aide should be given to those who need it, but shouldn't we start with the ones who are closer to our homes? I honestly don't want someone breaking into my house and hurting my family and my possesions just so he can get to my food, and yes, I have seen it happen many times. We should stop trying to send help to so many different countries at once, and concentrate on one at a time.
