Is time real?

Is time real? Is it another dimension of our being, or simply a concept created by the human brain so that it can comprehend the universe around it, or is it something else?

  • Time is a concept of the brain.

Time is not another dimension, it has no physical properties. All our measurements of time are simply complicated measurements of movement, and the perception of it being in different positions according to it's percieved movement. Our brain cannot handle this information logically, so it percieves "time" for our own sanity.

  • Time... hrm....

I was talking about this in my Philosophy class so here's some questions we came up with about time.

Can you have time without the beginning of time? Was there time before the big bang? (which goes into evolution) Is time just an invention so that we can keep tract of what's going on or is it something that actually exists? What if there was no one to perceive time, would time still continue to exist? Is time just something with perceive to exist?

Now, I doubt that any of these questions could be answered with actual evidence to back it up. But then again, that's what philosophy is all about - coming up with answers to questions we can't normally answer.

In some ways, time is just something we made up so we know when we have to be somewhere at a certain time. Without it, all of humanity would be lost (although then it wouldn't matter if I showed up late to class lol).

Anyways, I don't have actual answers to any of these questions. Time may be another dimension, but it may be more than just that.

  • Time Definitly Exists

Yes time exists and it has been proven. Any movement has an effect on time. For example if someone is moving very very fast, like at the speed of light, they experiance less time than someone who is stationary. If you had 2 watches set to the exact same time and one watch was put on a rocket ship and launched into space at the speed of light for one year, then upon its return it would be substantially behind the other watch. What seemed like a year to the stationary watch seemed like much less for the other. The fact that time can be manipulated proves that it exists.
