“it doesn’t matter if its true or not, if you belive in it, it doesn’t matter to anyone else.”

I've heard this stated many times. In fact once today. Does what other people sincerely believe matter? Should we tolerate others believing in what we believe to be harmful or immoral or should we try to show them the error of their ways and convince them to believe in what we believe to be good and moral.

And if people can't be turned around, are we morally obligated to take action to incarcerate or remove the threat that those "immoral" or "harmful" beliefs entail.

If you are a faithful person can you stand up and say anyone should be punished for anything at all (such as theft or murder) but not for every other sin against your faith (such as idolaty).

Does faith have meaning, if people are free to have faith in harmful and immoral things (which you have faith are wrong)?

  • It DOES matter if what you believe is true or not.

People act in accordance with their beliefs.

advocating the position that : everyone is free to believe whatever they want to, or that everyone has the right to their own opinion is the same as advocating the position that if you wrong me, or if you wrong others its all good as long as you believe it: essentially "EVERYTHING IS GOOD".

If you truly agree that everything is GOOD, then you have no basis for deciding one way or another on how you should act.

However if you believe that anything is wrong at all and should be avoided, then you are taking the position that what others believe to be good is important (because their actions are dependant on their beliefs) and they may only avoid that which is wrong if they believe it to be wrong (or else have been deprived of choice).

If you truly want to do good, then you are forced to try to convince others of what is good and what is wrong, or else use whatever reasonable means to cause them to be good.

Where does truth come into this?

Truth is merely the supreme reality. It is the set of beliefs which can not possibly be proven false (because they are truth). If you believe that there is such a thing as Truth, then it is to that standard which you must define good or bad.

If you claim to believe in truth, but claim to hold your a lesser standard of reality (any standard which permits falsehood), then you claim to believe that you identify certain deeds as bad when you would also would concede that they are in Truth good. And vice versa, certain things which you know are bad, you would none the less identify as good and perform. (the things which are bad in truth, but good in your lesser standard of reality).

Why would you name something as "good" if you know it is "bad"?

This is the very definition of immorality.

hence: to act as if it doesn't matter what the truth is, is proven to be IMMORAL.

You are morally obligated to hold other people to what is good in TRUTH and avoid what is bad in TRUTH. And you are morally obligated to believe in the TRUTH.

And knowing that any misunderstanding of TRUTH may lead you to commit immoral acts, you are morally obligated to seek TRUTH.

Incidentally.. it takes no faith to believe in the truth. Because the truth is that thing which agrees with everything you believe in that is true. And when truth contradicts what you believe and you dig deeper you invariably discover that in fact it was the TRUTH which was correct and it was your own belief which was false.

whosoever, held a false belief and upon discovering that their belief contradicted the truth found TRUTH to be in error?

This is the basis of science. And it must be the basis of morality.

  • reality

Truth and reality are but the common (mean average) perceptions of the whole of the environment in relation to one's own circumstance, thus no two person's views could ever be the same. We, as humans, evolved to use communication to gather like-minded individuals to our own causes for the strength of force through numbers, thus the most convincing liar / politician / salesman wins, even in the race to define reality and truth.

  • TRUTH???

WHAT IS TRUTH? TRUTH TO EACH AND EVERY PERSON VARIES AND IS SUBJECTIVE. IS THERE SOMETHING AS UNIVERSAL TRUTH? WHAT MAYBE TRUE AND REAL TO ONE IS A FALLACY TO ANOTHER. TO TRY TO CONVICE A PERSON THAT THEIR WAY OF THINKING MAYBE ERRONEOUS CAN BE QUITE DAUNTING. WHO IS TO SAY WHAT WE BELIEVE IS THE IDEAL TRUTH???

  • Faith, Belief, and Societal Law

People may believe whatever they wish, therefore free will. In a society, free will is limited to a certain extent determined by certain members of the population who write and help enforce the society's laws. Lying surely ends up not doing great things for people quite often, but is it something that would most often devestate or end a life? It could, but it would be a horrible law to follow, and it wouldn't achieve a great purpose. Society's law is not based on what you or I believe to be the truth about the world. The law of any society is made to keep peace so that all free people may live relatively peacefully, without fear for their lives, limbs, and livelihoods without some form of retribution. People should make their own choices on what they believe is right. If this conflicts with society, then that is that. I didn't write the laws, they are there. If you think that you should kill people who don't believe what you believe, then you will be in jail. Society's goal in law is to keep general peace and order. Faith has meaning. Every person is meaningful and so are their contributions.

  • The hardest thing in life

Someone once said "The hardest thing in life is letting go of what you thought was real". People will sometimes know that what they belive in may not be true, but aometimes they are so afraid to let go of this sense of comfort that they will believe anything. When we think that we can see reality, is the reality we see really there. Belief and hope are extremely way to complicated to just sum up in a few words. But if you believe something to be real, don't let what others say get to you. Instead go foward and try to prove that you are right. But don't be dissapointed if you find yourself wrong.

Wow, I really got off subject.
