Adam and Eve as the bible says had other sons and daughters in their lifetime. Cain may have married one of his sisters.

The Ancient Sumerians also had a story about Adam, ok not exactly the same but very similar, I that story Adam was not the first man, but rather the first of a kind (hence the ability of his offspring to find wives as they were not the only people, ok already makes more sense than the bible). Now the sumerians obviously had many gods, but two are prominent in the story these are called Enki and Enlil, in their story Enlil doesn't like people and thinks they should be kept without knowlegde, Enki on the other hand thinks that people should be allowed to develope and so therefore persuades 'Adam and Eve' to eat the fruit. It is Enlil who arrives back in the garden and is fairly angry that humans have gain knowledge that he feels they should not be 'liberated'hence the reference to become lik US. And therefore banishes them. It is in no way bad that they eat the fruit and the point is knowledge in itself is a good thing. now the sumerian beliefs were taken on by the Babylonions, as i understand the hebrews spent quite a bit of time exiled in babylon before the old testament was compiled. you don't think the story coul;d have been adapted, maybe. I don't know for sure but what i do know, is that is you change the stories in Genesis to being a battle between two gods essentially at war enlil trying to keep man down cased with floods etc. and enki trying to save them and advance there knowledge ie warning them about the flood, yes the Noah story is there too. The stories in the bible start to make logical seens(as stories that is).

Not sure, but possibly good guessVoted for by Pleading Artichoke.
I think by "the first people" it means the first of God's people. Only a certain race followed christianity for a long time. God considered them his people and no one else.

My beliefVoted for by Jbyame.
God sent his son on the earth to die for our sins because he loved us soo much as to send his only son to die upon a cross for us.
So that one day when we die we may live in heaven with him for eternity. He gives us all a chance to live with him.
God helps us through our troubles if we just have enough faith and all you have to do to recieve Gods eternity is belive have faith and ask him into your heart.
I have gone through bad bad experiences i Went to God and accepted him i could honestly tell you i have the best joy ever known it is so unexpressable joy and love from God.

Same Question Here.
You come off too humble, that's a great question! I've been asking myself that one for years..... After All: One who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; one who does not ask a question remains a fool forever. The question you pose is undoubtedly a very good one. I myself have found it extrememly difficult to find an answer (or even a mention) of how 2 complex organisms ccould possibly reproduce properly to create a diverse enough genetic pool to allow for the survival of an entire species. First and foremost, I believe this question is seldom if EVER addressed because of the obvious incest taboo question that is bound to emerge. If I remember my limited understanding of genetics correctly, the idea that 2 people or animals could repopulate the entire earth (and do it again with Noah's ark and all the creatures inside it,) the answer is simple. It's a myth. Scientifically impossible. Hypothetically, even if this is true, put simply: {X(1)X(2)} AND {X(1 OR 2)Y}= cannot produce a fertile male (XY). The species is extinct because there is no chance of the only Y chromosome ever (Adam's) mutating fast enough to produce any genetic diversity. I might be wrong but from a scientific perspective at least, the book of Genesis is not possible. Correct me if someone knows gentics well. There is also brief mention amongst similiar ancient texts that there were unmentioned female offspring from Adam and Eve. Either way, the taboo problem can't be circumvented. This is probably why nobody seems to want to discuss the question seriously. The taboo exists for a reason; it is harmful to the genetic pool as alike genomes are reinforced causing harmful mutations to emerge, if offspring is even possible at all (I have no idea...) Of course, in my humble opinion the entire bible contradicts itself so many times that it makes no sense at all. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth? or Turn the other Cheek and Let thee whom is without sin cast the first stone? Well, which one IS IT?? Even the Old Testament and New Testament condradict each other. I don't wish to offend anyone's religious beliefs here, but if you can't answer a question that simple, how can you possibly somehow possess the true answer to the enduring question--- "Why Are We Here?" People that perceive the world according to a doctrine of strict, literally interpretation of every written word, whether it be religion, law, or an editorial in the newspaper are dangerous. Religious fanaticism/extremism is the same no matter what, and is the same nonsense that causes terrorism, war, and death. However, unless one is a crazed religious fanatic that interprets every word of the old testament to be taken literally, it can be accepted as a fable, or teaching. What I mean by the above is that it can be acceptable if you don't interpret it literally. A simple explaination to a universal question for a simple people of the time, who obviously had no idea what genes are, and had no other explaination for the world other than what they were told. I am of the opinion that the question is unavoidable and there are theories that can fit in just fine with religious beliefs, as long as people understand that it is not LITERAL. It is METAPHORICAL. To close my arguement: Do a literal translation of a simple sentence from one modern language to another, then translate it back (using Babelfish or something similar.) You will end up with something very confusing from the most simple of statements. Use two different human translators and you'll get a more accurate result, but it still won't be exact. Now do that from one ancient language to another about 100 times, copy it over and over again by hand for at least 3000 years until the printing press is invented, and then you've got the answer: It's amazing that it makes any sense at all. This is clearly a scientific view and not a religious interpretation, obviously. Since science and religion rely on completely different rules of thought, this does not discredit or disparage the Bible at all. All this says is that it makes no logical sense. It does not mean that it can't make sense in a religious or spiritual way. (so don't get mad at me for saying the above, religious rightists.) Bring on the debate!!February 14, 2006

agreed but
i agree pretty much with what you say, Homefry. One question though other than the my statements elsewhere. If genesis is a metaphore what is it a metaphore for, Is that the key to understanding god. The main conclusions that can be drawn from the old testamnet as written is that every now and then god gets extremely pissed at us and has a go at destroying everything, and starting again.February 28, 2006
