I think that we should be able to write what we want when we want. My parents are trying to control my topic AND I LIKE WHAT I WRITE!

if you don't want....12% Voted for by NeferMaatNetjer, cosmosis.
if you don't want your parents criticing your poetry, the solution is simple...don't show it to them. It's YOUR self-expression, and if they don't appreciate it, don't let them read it. keep it in a hidden journal that you share only with your closest friends, if anyone at all. If your parents ask, tell them it's your personal diary, and it none of their business what it contains. You're a kid, for god's sake, you have a right to keep secrets.

Parents can critize their kids works, but they can't stop you from writing what you want. Granted, there will be some things you shouldn't show them, depending on the topic of the poem, story, whatever, but for the most part, parents can offer all kinds of critiques. Wether or not you accept them is up to the writer.

personally, i have MANY poems and stories that i do not wish my parents to read, but the best way to keep something from them is to leave it lying in plain sight. everyone thinks that, if you want something secret, you hid it. it wont work all the time, but you sorta have to work up to it you know. leave one poem here, (exceptable) and another one there. after a while they wont read it. but of course, if your doing drugs, or thinking of commiting suicide, dont you think your parents deserve a heads up? its all botched up in what the poem is.

King Dad IVmy house is a benevolent dictatorship. it will remain so until my child overthrows me in a bloodless coup. then i shall be sent to live out my days in the monastery / nursing home. at that time she will pay me tribute by bringing me a McDonald's hamburger every Sunday. until that time i weld full editorial rites, power to grant travel visas, pardon privileges and i will pour boiling oil on any barbarian who tries to scale my walls!12% Voted for by bob2314, Molzahn.

Free Thought, free writingVoted for by Untouchable Blue.
I write all the time, it's one of my greatest pleasures. I have plenty that I don't want to show my parents. Parents have no right to stop you from expressing your own opinions and in my opinion, writing whatever you want. Writing is basically thought on paper, and nobody has the right or ability to control your thoughts. (Well, other than you of course)

Poetry Can't Be Controlled By Someone ElseVoted for by Dark Red Ink.
Yes, I should be able to write what ever I want, with or without parent's criticism. No, parents don't have full control over what poetry you write. (I don't think they have any control). No, parents should not have any control over a child's poetry.
Poetry is poetry, some one else can't have control over it, and I feel parents should only offer constructive criticism if their kid asks for it.
My poetry is often very personal and often very dark. I've tried showing my some poetry to my parents, my mum in particular, but she pretty much just told me to get a life and start talking like a normal human. Nevertheless I still write poetry.

Morally WrongLegally speaking I believe your parents can control what you write (the first amendment does not come into play until you are eighteen in cases like these) but it is morally wrong. For me, what I write is akin to what I think, and stopping me from writing would be like taking a bit of my soul away. No one, parent or not, should do that.Voted for by Mairi-Alannah.

Freedom of Expressing one's Views.Voted for by Mujtaba H Zaidi.
I have been craeting essays and poems on almost all topics since my childhood. I also have the habit of diary-writing. And I even discuss my love in diary. But my respected parents never imposed checks on my writing. Children must be given full freedom of writing.

I agree with you fully there. why should our parents care of what we write and when we write. Writing is something thats keeps us calm and relax sometimes(well it does for me), more like a stress reliever(eh i think i spelled relieve wrongpnktrky
