We hear all the time about those who believe in absolute truth, and those that believe truth is relative. I want to know which you believe and why. If you believe its absolute, then show me how you can prove that it is. If you believe its relative, give me an example. And, please, please, don't respond to an opinion you disagree with with negative sentiments towards a person. And no calling people foolish or stupid for believing a certain way either. That goes for both sides. Got it.

Both exist but absolute would be better25% Voted for by looking4realtruth, Jesusquest.
I believe absolute truth can only come from religion. (Which one is right I'm not getting into; there's probably at least a dozen debates on that subject already)I also believe those who do not believe in religion or a God or a higher power believe in "relative morals" because they have nothing greater than themselves to base their morals on.

Truth, like everything else, is relative25% Voted for by Lazarae, armoured heart.
Truth is only truth in relation to things that are untrue. If there were no lies, everything would be true, and therefore truth would not exist. Good couldn't exist without evil, because without evil to compare it to, everything would be good, so nothing would be good. It's the same idea as far as truth is concerned. For truth to exist, something must be proven false. For instance, It's truth that the earth revolves around the sun. However, if it was not stated false that the sun revolves around the earth, the first statement could not be concidered true. Inversely, without believing the first statement true, one could not concider the second statement untrue.

Truth: To be or not to beVoted for by katchi.
Truth must be absolute. It cannot change (or else it wouldn't be true, correct?) If something is true, it cannot be disproved later on, it cannot be reversed. It is what it is.
That's like saying that God is relative...but God is the Truth, the Way and the Light.

The absolute valueVoted for by twistedstranger.
In order for truth to be truth by definition, it would have to be absolute. Truth based on circumstance, variables and opinion is mere speculation towards a truth. As for the "relative morals", I have noticed that those who live without a "higher power" seem to care less about the formality of morals and more about the practicality of choice and convenience.

yes it can, oh, yes it can, in a propangandist society when the media is completely biased. (which is real unfortunately)

There is absolutely no absolute truthVoted for by Makessenseright.
This statement is an oxymoron, it cannot be true. Truth is absolutely absolute, that makes sense. Truth is hard an fast, cannot be changed or altered, same with right, wrong, good, evil...

Truth is neither absolute or relative
Truth is entirely subjective. The problem is that we use truth as our definition as to what know is true. I'd think everyone can agree to a simple fact, that it is a law and a truth, that what goes up must come down. Anyone who walks outside and throws a rock will be absolutely guaranteed that that rock will fall back down to earth. However it is also known as a truth, that an object with enough signifigant speed and angle of ascent, can escape the gravitational pull of the earth. I think truth is the handle by which man can grasp the universe, nature, and the world around us. However that truth is always subject to change, b/c man is chaotic being that seeks order in a chaotic universe. The way I see it, its usually through conflict, or chaos that causes man to reevaluate the world around him. The truth was invented to give one account of all things to act as a baseline for everyone else. The truth is simply one account of an event or events as agreed upon by a majority in a general consensus. Kind of makes you wonder, just how truthful is our history? Anyhow, thats how I see it. I'm probably dead wrong.January 24, 2006
