Should we attempt to colonize other planets or stick with the one we have?

Should we go to other planets and attempt to make new homes "in the stars" or should we stick to living on Earth?

  • I'm all for it.

I wouldn't mind pioneering a colonization of another planet; frankly, I think it would be amazingly interesting. But one could argue that we should "take care of the problems we have now" before we bring them to any other worlds. But it's been a hell of a long time and those problems are stil here. I say screw that excuse and lets pack up.

  • Colonize in the Stars
I Think we could coloinize the stars, but keep a place here on earth to live. Get oil from places like Saturns moon Titan, and search for extr-terrestrial life. It would be an adventure, and those who participate would be metioned in history books for centurys to come.

  • stick with the one we have

Colonize other planents and destroy them the way we are destroying Earth? I don't think so.

  • terraformation.

In order to be eligable to populate other worlds we not only need the technology to do it effectivly and and in a short enough time that generations will not have to pass by while we terraform the planet. According to research it is possibly to terraform Mars within 200 years. Thats providing we actually got plants to Mars. Then theres the problem of animals getting there because plants tend to be easy to maintain but a cow or dog is harder to manage. The human race must also be able to prove that we can take care of our own little blue marble. And right now we're not exactly achieving it with flying colours. Once we clean up this one and set it on a better track then we might be able to think about going to our celestial neighbours. You dont start to cook supper before you finish lunch.

  • well

First off, we have to build something that will actually travel quickly enough that we can get there before we are dead, and not to mention, big enough, and cost effective! ah, and then there is the actual finding of a planet like earth. (moon, planet like jupiter, our climate...) its highly unlikely that we will find another planet in any of our lifetimes, let alone our grand(x3) kids lives.

  • Mind our own business

If we were meant to live on other planets, we'd be there. Even if its possible at some point, Im sure theyd have to do a ton of stuff to the new planet to make it livable for us therefore causing more problems for everyone. If it became possible and there was some kind of oxygen on another planet whose to say its gonna last long enough for people to live there. Eventually most of the resources are going to be gone and if everyone is living there and the oxygen goes byebye...well so do the people.

  • We need a new home

Earth doesn't seem to have much time left... No, I should put it another way: maybe the planet will leave, but after these dramatic changes and catastrophies that are taking place, we will not survive... or our children won't... So I think colonizing other planets would be a good idea, though without war and minimizing risks. It'd make me, at least, feel safer. It'd give us another home. Just in case.

  • leave this crap hole behind

with the way we're going, this planet's going to be gone within the next 50 years. Scientists have even said on the news that we better start taking care of our planet now, or we could just kiss it goodbye. Also with all the asteroids and other disaters that are supposed to happen to us, what are the chances we'll be around long enough to get to that point? (that doom's day asteroid)

  • that.
We've already messed with ours enough, and now we have people wanting to go to others? No. I say make them clean up what they did first. None of that littering that humans are always complaining about.

  • how convenient

yes how very convenient, how poetic... we are researching how to "terra-form" seemingly uninhabitable planets when our own is going to be fairly uninhabitable pretty soon, so they say... to be able to survive our own damages, i say keep going with the research and give give give more money to it because we are going to need to "terra-form" our own planet, whether or not we get off-world it won't matter if we are doing it the right way.... i have this lovely image of a great big "eden project " type dome in the nevada desert or in the most polluted part of new york or chicago or tokyo... why not the chernoble site to simulate an inhosptitable off-world atmosphere???? we provide our own challenges along with their solutions.

  • Yes, but how?

Firtly, it would take thousands of years to find a planet eligible for human colonization, and even if we do, it will then take even longer to get the people up there, and there will be no way we would get to the planet in a human lifetime. It's just not possible.

But if we could lengthen the human lifespan, or even harness cryogenics to keep them in a suspended state for the majority of the trip, then we should colonize other planets.

It is the destiny of the human race to destroy everything they are given. Earth will demise because of human neglegence, and we will need to find another home.

  • Not in our lifetimes

or probably, ever! We'll need some serious scientific advancements, the sorts that will probably take tens of centuries. But, most likely, we will destroy ourselves before then.

  • New Dump
Its not really very likely that we will ever have the technology to even think about colonization, but we could use the shuttles we have now or possibly build a much larger one to use a transport to remove toxic waste,as well as just general household garbage to a suitible place convieniently close such as perhaps the moon or mars.

  • Yes, but sadly no
I have no moral qualms with the exploration and colonization of space and I don't even buy all this "humanity is too evil to be let out" business either"

As I see it there is simply neither the technology to achieve it, nor the political will to encourage it, nor any real economic incentives to develop the technology.

Maybe some day, but it would take a bolder outlook on life by the general population - more likely it would be a younger nation who took it up (Israel, a rejuvenated Middle East, some insane and suddenly rich African king :-} ) rather than the older powers.

    Interesting topic...
