Why do we throw around the word love?

People are contantly saying things like I love ice cream. Why has the word lost all meaning. When I get in a relationship, we are fine up till the moment I hear those word. I’ve know you 12 hours and you love me? Thank you goodbye. Why does the word not mean anything anymore in these days of fast food and faster love.

  • Love and its meanings...

People define it they way they choose to define it. There are no “Love-Usage-Correction-Offericers”. People view it as a thing they are allowed to mold a meaning around until it pleases them. But they don’t stop there, many people have multiple definitions of the term and then the idea of “types of love” comes into play. Some people only attach the deep personal meaning to it when it’s used as “in love”, some people use it as a metaphor for God, and some people just like its hyperbolic overtones when referring to things they enjoy a lot. But there’s no sense in getting twisted-up-panties over a society throwing around a word that most people have separate meanings for. The idea its capable of suggesting isn’t lessened by the use of it in other senses. It’s a word…. not a pez-dispenser.

  • Love..

I think that you actually answered your own question. Its because everything in this world has lost its meaning. Money, power, respect. Love is an obvious loss as well.

  • What the hell...

Well. I won't necessarily say that 14 and 15 year olds can't love. But some kids are so desperate to be IN LOVE with someone, they just throw themselves into a relationship and say 'I love you', because they don't understand the true significance of it.

Take this for example. I have a friend, who asked a guy out. After the period of a few minutes, he sent her a txt saying 'I love you'. What the hell is that?! It's not love. It's infatuation when you feel the NEED to say I love you.

  • love,,, like

its because there is no middle ground between like and love. care for, possibly, but its not enough sometimes. so when you more than like someone, you assume, or jump right to even, “i love you” which really means, in most cases “i really like you a lot, i care about you a lot, and you mean a lot to me”

  • Love

Not all the time but most of the time humans use the term “love” when they actually mean “like”.

  • like and love

I have way too much experience on this subject to simply state that we don’t understand our own feelings. The fact is that we don’t have a word to say between like and love and so if we always use the word like than there seems to be a lack of developement in a relationship. we need another word.

  • new opinion about why do we throw around the word love?

because it is too easy to say you love someone . in the end love is a word . it is the action of the word that brings it to life . if i love you how do i prove it? people say they love eachother and then one cheats on the other.is the a degree of love or a scale? romeo and juliet is love. true love is not the restraint of just saying it and thats it .love is more than itself.but what do i know about it .i dont believe in it…...

  • multi purposes

I think “love” has many purposes…in differnt contexts(sp) it can be interpruted(sp) differently. For example: saying “I love Tostitos chips” Is different than telling your boy/girlfriend that you love them. It’s all in the use of the word.

  • Bah!

Love as a pure emotion does not exist, it is a combination of emotions, including COMPATABILITY. People these days adore exaggeration, and they believe too strongly in this “love”, so they throw it around to get this strange melange of things…love.

  • Dude, like yeah

I feel very uncomfortable saying the L wordunless I really do love the guy. I say i love you to my parents, cause i do, but in a different way. But to say it to my Boyfriend, that's just something I don't do. If i tell you i love you then it's either you're my bestest friend and I love you like family, or i'm so genuinely in love with you that I want the world to know.

  • More then a word

ill tell u why people throw around the word love. Because we have people who say i love u and then leave with someone down the road. We have 14 or 15 yr olds saying i love u to someone.. when they dont know the meaning of love. The people throw around this word because the word has lost the respect it had once had and it will never have again untill the PEOPLE stop using it as a way to get into bed with someone.. Im sick of the way people just toss around one of the most powerful words on earth like it was useless. So as soon as the word starts to gain it respect that it owns I Personally Will never Love someone. Because i dont want any part of the Deminization of the word that has the power to heal, break, destroy, build up. And much More

  • love...

when you say you love something that should hold the deepest meaning of anything you have ever said, people misuse it because they think it means favorite thing or person or it implies it is their favorite, instead of using like which is not strong enough to describe what they are feeling at the moment.
