Does Music Shape Your Personality?

Does listening to a certain type of music change your personality, peer group etc. Does listening to rock make you a rocker/greebo/grunger (whatever you call them) for example.

  • Music does not shape you...

Music does not shape your personality, but rather, it reflects it. I believe that the kind of music that you are atttracted to says something about your taste, and your personality, but most importantly your mood. I listen to all different kinds of music, depending on how I am feeling at the time. I think most people do.

  • Does it matter?

Personally, I think it doesn't. I've seen these really preppy girls with Valley girl accents that are into metal and I sometimes find myself watching Spice World, even though I'm into drawing skulls on my hands and being everything a boy/grrl band fan would stereotypically not be. And with friends, I like rock and metal etc. while a lot of my friends are into rap. It doesn't matter if your friends have a lot in common with you, it just makes it easier to start a conversation.

  • Yes!

I speak from experience here, I've found that the kind of music I listen to does shape me,it's made me more interested in the arts, especially music, though some of the music I listen to might shape me more than other kinds of music because most of my music is from a few Broadway shows, so they all have some kind of story and characters to them. Also, a lot of people who like rap try to imitate their favorite rap singer by dressing like them and even talking like them. The way music shapes you may not be visibly obvious but I think it does affect you in some way or another.

  • Music does Shape Personality Sometimes

I don't really have a label other than one of those smart kids which involves about fifty or so kids who are pretty intelligent. We all listen to different things, and we're all friends with people who aren't in all advanced classes and who don't ever get straight A's. However, I am in the band at my school, and I have a lot of friends who like to play music. We don't like the same kinds of music, but we do love to play it. Music has shaped me in playing my clarinet, because music is a big part of my life, but music has not made me hyper like one friend, really stubborn like another, or very huggy and affectionate like my other friend. Music has shaped my personality, but not to be like everyone else. Music has helped to make me different.
