Should the PTA and the board of education have the right to ban books they find inappropriate?

The school boards should not be able to ban certain books unless it discusses something that small children definately should not read.(such as satanism)These books should be in the public library in a special section or something. My mom once told me that Saint Marks banned The Catcher in the Rye by JD Sallinger just because it was mildly inappropriate. So what? In 6th grade, I read Buddist Boy (I'm forget who wrote it.) for a book report and it dropped quite a few Fuck bombs. I got this at a school library too. The book Animal Farm was also banned because it was related to communism and the author, George Orwell thought a world where everyone was equal to be a good idea. Maybe it was because a the talking animals too. The thing that really pisses me off is the reaction to Harry Potter. It's not satanism to talk about witches and wizards. Wouldn't books like The Chronicles of Narnia fall into that category, with all the talking animals, the lion god, and the witch? I have an idea, let's just skip Haloween from now on as well! Little kids dressed up as devils and witches, that's so-called "Satanism" too then.

never ban a book15% Voted for by a sweetheart lost, trashed.
Banning books is horrible. People read to little as it is. Why should books be banned just because they are "inappropriate". who decides they are inappropriate. Especially in a time where everything is on television. And i mean everything!
Like 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 our vocabulary's are shrinking, television is most important, our thoughts are directed, we don't care about anything anymore! Whoa Bessy, I better stop while I'm still coherent. Books most definitely should NOT be banned EVER.

it does help a book thoughVoted for by rozz669.
i don't agree with banning or burning a book! though it can help a book- whenever something gets under someones skin, and they go to the extent of burning and/or banning...it can help a book or a record. it's a horrible practice, that will always sadly be around. but it can help put a struggling writer on the map.

It depends.Voted for by chaotic999life.
It certainly depends on the age of the students...For example, if we are talking about children under maybe 15 years old, then I think the education system should be able to put some kind of censure on the books for sure. However, if the children are young adults, then, with regards to books I think they could make up their own minds about what they read. This is what I think, for now, but it is open for debate.

Freedom of ChoiceVoted for by Marmot Wisdom.
Big Brother is watching you, people. We have to fight for our rights, Larry Flynt did, and he won. I am not into porn, but I support his right to publish it. FREEDOM OF SPEECH, FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. I agree, books that children read should be monitored along with television. Adults should have freedom of choice. Where do you draw the line?

The books that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its own shame. Oscar Wilde
Did you ever hear anyone say, "That work had better be banned because I might read it and it might be very damaging to me"? Joseph Henry Jackson
Why would you burn a book? That's kind of f*cked up if you ask me. I have so much to say, but not enough time. I have to be going now. I will post again with more!

No.Voted for by Zachongz.
No. That's TOTALLY unfair.
In many schools, SE Hinton's THE OUTSIDERS is banned due to gang violence.
Also, JK Rowling's HARRY POTTER books are banned due to witchcraft.
But, isn't the point of school to promote Literacy, Math Skills, etc?
Besides, Kids need to know what's out in the world. It's not like they're gonna get a sticker on everything they do with the word EXCELLENT written across the top!? That's the EXACT issue. Life's not easy.

its just society trying to limit the intelligence and brain power. because they are afraid of what can happen if people think for themselves. whether they admit it or not.

George Orwell
George Orwell did not support communism he wrote its shortcomings in both '1984' and Animal farm - a general summing up of animal farm would be 'everybody is equal, although some are more equal than others...' Honestly if you read his books you would realise he most definitely does not advocate communism. Animal Farm is a bit more subtle in its mockery but 1984 is a clear anti communist bookFebruary 9, 2006
