What does the Bible mean when it says not to judge?

Well, it obviously is not a universal abolition of judgement. We make them everyday about everything. We judge what would be best or worst to do, who would be better or worse to spend time with, what people to avoid and what people to gather with. We also state that a person's lifestyle is wrong or is right. What is it that Jesus spoke of when he said not to judge? Well, I don't think he said not to judge at all. The whole verse says "Judge not lest yte also be judged." It is not a prohibition, but a warning. We always judge and always will, but I believe Jesus is saying that we should not judge what we cannot (which is a person's salvation and soul) and we should use righteous judgement in everything. When one states that something is wrong because the Bible says so or something to that degree, they are using right judgement. They are not making the judgement itself but are rather interpretting the judgement made by the Bible. That is what I think anyways.

What it means.25% Voted for by EternalEyes, Christopher Chanco, aria94.
What I think the bible means is, not to condemn people for what they do just because they do it. I mean, we can all be saved by grace and nothing can separate us from God's love, so why curse what God hasn't cursed (as it says in numbers)
Meaning, don't be so quick to shove people down the plank (metaphorically) for something that God would easily forgive. Instead, try to help that person by letting them know that what theyre doing is wrong and brining them to repentance. This way, people can avoid being hurt by words, or even physically, as steven was stoned to death in Acts because he went against the sanhedrin (although, Steven was in the right, but that's besides the point).
The important question here, is how would Jesus judge people?
With LOVE, of course.

judgement is merely any one human's mind filtering things they see and telling them what is right and wrong about the external world of people places and things through past experiences all in an attempt to control them and fit in with society in many cases. these individuals are too easily swayed. we like independent thinkers.

juging others is wong the world could be a better place but we all juge to quikly its like secound nature. i belive that it is not right to judge becaues theres to much comfusion and misscamunacation therefore it makes the world a place were people are always wondering that the say or think about thim its human nather but i do beliver that jesus is the only one who has the true right to juge. why be quick to judge, find out who the person on the inside not just the out.

if you want to be critical of something or of yourself than thats okay. but you have no greater authority than anyone else. i'm a christian but i don't understand why some christians think the way to witness is to first tell someone they are wrong and treat them badly. christians are just like any other human, we think we know everything and that our way is right. its not a bad thing, its human nature, but people should understand that concept and learn how to break through it before walking around denouncing religions they know little or nothing about. i personally would hate to be the one responsible for turning someone away from christianity. ~ shirley

right on
I agree with your assesment of Christians making so-called "unfounded judgments" upon people when what they are really doing is using the authority of the Bible to point out something unrighteous that should be changed or dicarded.February 23, 2006
no, please no
This is disturbing. If you find that the only right to judge comes from the Bible....(shudders). The Bible condemns equality. Have you read the old testament? It supports racism, slavery, extreme sexual discrimination, polygamy, incest, rape, and even GENOCIDE(the extermination of the inhabitants of the promised land), sound familiar? I hope someone with much more time can convince you of the evils you worship. visit this web site http://www.evilbible.com/ I hope it helps you find some sort of illumination on you duality(hypocrisy)keyman7

Cherub is right
The Old testament is littered with incident that support what Cherub is saying, the very fact that the Hebrews counted themselves as gods chosen people is racist in the extreme. A veiw that Jesus tried very hard to change. Thats why he said 'love thy neighbour'and was kinda the point when he chose a Sumaritian (a Gentile)for his story, it was exaclty why he chose to say 'we are all gods children'. He was tying to change the jews world view built up and supported over centries of old testament doctrine.June 11, 2006

It's about judging people
I think that the ”....lest you also be judged” part indicates strongly to not judge other people “lest ye be judged the same”. I don’t think it has anything to do with judging outside of judging people. Any judging outside of other people is just withing our own choices. But we certainly don’t have the right to judge other people. Only God knows what is inside peoples’ hearts to know how to judge them.July 29, 2006
