Values are personal. It's like a shade of lenses we each see the world through. With this system, there's no real right or wrong in a universal sense. It's all a matter of perspective.

  • Values are contingent on circumstances
I wouldn't kill but the Commander-in-Chief might force me. I'm against cannibalism but stuck on a mountain I'd eat them so I could see my family back home again. I wouldn't steal but if I couldn't get a job because I was black, I would steal to calm the turbulence in my stomach. I am honest but if a girl I didn't like asked me for my number I would lie that I had a girlfriend so her heart wouldn't be broken.

I have no values. I do what I have to do depending on the circumstances, time and place.

  • The value of thrift: to pick up the penny, or not?

When you drop a penny or a few pennies on the ground, do you pick it back up?

I don't drop change on the ground.

I pick up the change you drop.

One way to illustrate my point is to retell the story of the computer hacker who worked at the bank, who programmed the odd pennies off transactions to go into an offshore account. He amassed a fortune before he was caught.

I pay for gas and other expenses on pennies, aluminum tabs, cans, and other scrap metal. I have time left over to write, to think, to enjoy my family, friends, life itself. Who's laughing now? Me that's who, on my way to MORE than one bank.

As to the argument that the amount of energy is not worth the penny retrieved, I say that's nonsense. Most of you who scorn to pick up a penny are lazy oxygen thieves. American suffers from obesity, laziness, and fear of pain. That's why we're losing this war on terrorism, just like we have been losing the war on drugs. Pick up the penny, people and get some exercise. You don't have to pay big bucks like some do for a silly gym where you look like gerbils on tread mills.

We'll see, some day, who has the more wealth, me who pinch & scrape, or you who think you're too good or too rich to pick up a cent or aluminum can tab.
