women in Islam (why the veils?)

I have a question for Muslims, and I do not mean any disrespect. I want to know where in the Koran does it require women to wear veils or \burkas\, and why does Islam require this? I knew quite a few Arab women in college, and most of them were very attractive, so what I want to know is why does the whole muslim world seem to want to hide their women? again, I'm asking out of a genuine desire to know, not out of disrespect or sarcasm, so please don't get upset.

  • Islam and women

Religion & Law is always there for good and benefit of the weaker person. Woman has courage, strength and all true but they do not have strength to defend themselves.

Thus religion & law always aims at protecting her against all sorts of people on the earth. In todays world every second news in a case of rape, molestation or misbehaivior with women. This is all because women are not pretecting their selves. Islam knows that God has created attractive faces for women and also attractive figures. Tauzihul Masail the book states that the women's attraction is all for her husband and no one else. Thus to protect it from others God has ordered women to attain hijab.

Moreover God has created the respect of a woman in the hijab you can observe. A woman without hijab is walking far from you, you address her as, "hi sweety, hi sexy..." but another women walking next to you with full hijab you will unintetionally say, "hallo madam, hallo mohtarma, salam mohtarma."

believe me i know why you think that..but i'ved in egypt among muslims for 10 years and i'm from the usa..i became amuslim. it is required but you cant get veiled if you dont wnt to in your heart..its a choice.its not about hiding our women..not at all my friends are veiled and they wear jeans and are into fashion..think of it this way..if u had a rare diamond you wouldnt want it to get scratched or stared at with lust so you'd cover it..you are only required to cover ur hair and to ur hands and ankles..its a choice..like nunnery..i'm not veiled and i'm muslim. even though you r supposed to after puberty. i'm not ready for tht yet, i hope that helps
