Why are we still discriminating?

I am in high school, but what I am about to write about is not exclusively about high school, it seems to explode itself into every part of society. Everyday I go to the lunch room, only to notice that all the white kids are at their tables talking with only white people, and all the blacks and hispanics are sitting together at their own tables. Call me dumb, call me whatever you want, but this just bugs the shit out of me. We are in a new millenium isn't it time to forget about what happened in the 1800s or the 50's, 60's and 70's and just get through it? Why cant white people and black people sit together and enjoy some conversation about useless shit, just like they would sitting at their own tables. I am sure there is some kind of common ground that they can meet at. I hear many blacks talk about how marvelous Martin Luther King, Jr was, and the dreams that he had that he made prosper. But did he really? I really think that MLK would be pretty disappointed if he walked into my lunchroom. Racial-importance really brings people down. I have seen many smart, unique, white kids really go down hill because they want to be more like their race, at least in this area, and mingle with the rednecks, because that is the in thing for the white kids to do. I have seen many smart, amazingly gifted black people, who just acted like an American, go from wearing nice normal clothes, to wearing pants that hang down to his knees, and say "Nigga" every other word. Its really disturbing to me, that everyone can't learn to get a long with eachother. With all the diversity we have in this country, I think it would make for some good times. So..people if you are one of those who goes on lunch break, and you go sit with your normal white ladies or gentleman, take a chance and go sit with the new black girl, or the hispanic girl you never really got a chance to get to know. You would really be surprised. Stop putting yourself in a box, who knows, that "different" person you never got up your courage to talk to could make a really good friend, or show you a new way to look at things.

I see your point, but after reading your post I am reminded of an old saying that most people have heard before: "You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink." Especially in the school systems, the pressure to fit in is soooooooooooo tremendous and it usually carries more weight than most people realize.
