Should the law, end all drunkenness?

So... should it be more illegal, then it already is? Everyone says,'Don't drink and drive' 'Plan ahead' But, that doesn't do much, since Drunkenness is still the number one cause of Death in the world.

  • No

I THINK America tried this once before...With less than wonderful results too.

  • we already tried that

In 1929, the eighteenth amendment made all alcohol consumption illegal in the United States. All this accoplished was to make bootleg booze a big industry for gangsters like Al Capone, and force the government to spend millions trying to enforce a law that so many people were willing to break. Speakeasys were established, and private citizens often died, or went blind or insane trying to make illegal "bath-tub gin". finally, in 1935, the twenty-first amendment repealed the eighteenth, and alcohol could be legally purchased again. So, If prohibition failed in the 1930s, how could it hope to succeed now? Marijuana has been illegal since the 30s. Has THAT stopped anybody from using it?

  • FACT

Top Ten Causes of Death in the World according to the World Health Organization:

    1. Heart Disease 2. Cerebrovascular Disease 3. Lower Respiratory Infection 4. HIV/AIDS 5. Pulmonary Disease 6. Perinatal conditions 7. Diarrhoeal Diseases 8. Tuberculosis 9. Road/Traffic Injuries 10. Lung Cancer

Since HIV/AIDS is listed far above traffic accidents (these are not drunk-driving accidents either, those are seperated) should we ban people from having sex?

  • What proof do you have?

Where did you come up with the "fact" that "drunkeness is the largest cause of death in the world". This is a pretty big world, I think you need to do some actual research.

ABUSE is the problem, not the drug.

Drinking and driving is wrong and it is already illegal with very very very strict punishments. Making something illegal doesn't make it go away. When you take a product (drugs, alcohol, prostitution, etc...) out of the legal and monitored market it creates a black market which creates an even bigger problem.

Oh, and have you ever heard of proabition and the results that got?

  • Hope so

I hope every should know way more than just what it does, when you are drunk. Because, alcohol can make you start many drugs. And many probably won't realize it. Of course you know, alcohol can change your personality. I have a quote to say. "Drunkenness opens your eyes, but can narrow your mind, permanently."

  • free will

although alcohol isn't good for you in vast quantities, i believe that it is everybodys free will to drink. Why should the government control yet another thing in our lives? However I believe there should be more help out there for alcoholics.

  • meh

there's nothing wrong with getting drunk. what's wrong is being stupid while drunk. people don't give up their keys when they plan to get drunk and think that they're suitable to drive because they haven't missed any doors lately. at best, just put in a law requiring a designated driver.

  • Been there done that.

America's done that...That resulted in Bootleggers and Moonshine. There is no way on a cold day in Hell that this world is ever going to rid itself of alcohol.

  • Politicians would have to quit first.

I don't think they would pass a law like that because politicians, (not all) are some of the biggest drinkers. It is not the drink that kills, but the individual responsibility of drinking., ie. designated driver, etc. Go by some of these political conventions, many of these people are not in limos, but drive drunk. You think the cops are stopping to check them for DWI? No, they are simply keeping the traffic spots open for them to get home. It would scare the hare of a rabbit!

People who want to drink will still drink, except it will become even more popular in some circles because it is illegal. But I don't really care, I am breaking the law now, I'd find a way to break that law too.
