Many people take for granted the meaning of insanity and use too freely the word. What does it mean to you and who is not?

sane/insane25% Voted for by Molzahn, insanity embodied.
I believe that the term sanity is more used for a persons ability to conform to social norms. Some people are labled insane just because they have self-destructive thoughts or something else like it. "It's not normal so it can't be sane can it?" Most people just decide to use the words insane because of their inability to find the proper word.

well some insane people are actually very smart and because they stuff that we don't agree with like people in history were smart but they killed geniuses without a second thought about.

Rational and IrrationalVoted for by JM Kenyon.
Sane people approach human occurances with a sense of rationality and reason. They can find a balance between thought and emotion that keeps them from doing impulsive, irrational things.
Insane people lack the mental connections needed to find a balance between emotions and thoughts. Thoughts can become seriously obsessive and emotions can trigger bizzare and "insane" actions.
Now, on to why people call themselves insane; it most cases it is hyperbole, in other words, a grand exaggeration used to emphisize a simplistic point. EX: "I could eat a whole cow." would mean someone is very hungry.
Well, "I'm insane!" could mean more than one thing but I'd take it to mean that the adverage person is emotionally or cognitively confused.

You are not insane... your stupid...Voted for by Your mothers a cow.
Alright, do you mean, for instance, when radical teens act stupid, and then say 'oh, i'm so insane?'. I hope that's what you mean, because that's what I'm about to respond to.
Alright, I agree, it is too freely used in the world today. My father is a paranoid schitzophrenic, so, when people talk about 'crazy' or 'insane' things they have done, I can only laugh. They are in control of what they are doing. I believe the word crazy can be defined as 'sporratic' or 'spontaneous' or 'uncontrolled', not as 'stupid'. When my father has his 'insane' moments, he is completely out of control, hearing voices etc. When dumb teenagers do doughnuts on their lawn, or jump off of their houses for a stunt, they are in control, and are therefore not insane.
I think it is much too loosely used, and maybe people should take into consideration those who are truly 'insane', and have a bit more respect.
(and I don't know what that other poster was talking about...)

Sane is for the plainVoted for by devotionemotion.
Sure there are people with sever psychological problems, but I believe that normal is not a real word thus neither should sanity be one either.

sanity.Sanity is the state of mind where a person's beliefs are not contradicted by other beliefs. Regardless, of what someone's mode of logic is, be it they are a christian or athiest, a christian must abide by the code they believe in without contradiction in their thoughts and actions, as an athiest would do the same. Also, it is a sense of control you have over yourself. Someone who cannot control themselves is at a level insane.Voted for by antsandmoths.
Unfortunately, many think people are insane when they have strange or unpopular belief systems, or if they cannot conform well in a group. Sometimes the stress put on people with different opinions or if they have difficulty fitting in are caste out and this may influence a sense of insanity that grows in them. Insanity is not the fact that they where different, but grows on the fact that they where different.
