Why Does Society reject what is different or what they can't understand?

Why is what is different rejected?

  • Because

Because if they can't understand it, how can they accept it. Society doesn't like accepting ideas that are foreign to them because they aren't used to that. That's why there is censorship.. Censorship is the tool of those who have the need to hide actualities from themselves and others. Their fear is only their inability to face what is real. Somewhere in their upbringing they were shielded against the total facts of our experience. They were only taught to look one way when many ways exist. Charles Bukowski

  • Being different

So many times people have come up to me and said, "I am going to give you a make over," or said "I am going to make you into a pimp." Why can't they accept who I am. Why can't they accept the fact that I can't be labeled as a goth, "gangsta", skater, drama king, etc.? I personally think that society rejects what is different or what can't be labeled because people are afraid of what they don't understand. I think that is the reason the Protestants came to America. Because the Catholics were persecuting the in Europe because they were Protestant.

  • Tradition

Tradition divides us all. We fear what we do not understand because it does not fit in with the view of the world that we learned in childhood, or defined for ourself in adulthood. Naturally, we like what we recognize, understand, and have experienced (light, food we have eaten before, and familiar cultural celebrations) and fear or dislike what is uncertain, unknown, or unfamiliar (darkness, foreign food, other cultural celebrations). This the reason for racism, homophobia, and fear of change. Our need for tradition binds us to an unchanging and familiar world which does not exist except in our minds. If someone pushes the boundaries of our simplified understanding of the world, we respond with fear and rejection.

  • Fear- It is all fear

Like my fellow philosophers said in their philosophies above, it is because of fear. I think people fear what they can't understand because, what is different always has the potential to be better or dominant. If there is something that is unknown to you, how do you know if it is superior or inferior? You don't, and so many people try to eliminate what is different or unknown to them because they don't know if it is going to dominate them or if they are going to walk all over it.
