As I student in high school I observe many people cheating. Sometimes people cheat on tests. More often I notice people "sharing" answers on homework, meaning they are not doing all the work themselves that they are taking credit for. In this instance I mean just that by cheating- taking credit for something you did not do. So, does cheating help the cheater or does it hinder them?

Cheating Is Detrimental To AllVoted for by Catavader.
Cheating harbors a falsity in that one receives payment for something that another person earned, which can only be harmful to both parties directly involved and any third parties.
As an example, let us say that I cheat my way through medical school to please some family member and then successfully pursue a career as an artist. When a need for a medical personal arises, I may be the best person in the public view; however, in actuality I am not. This means either that I must expose myself or do something I am incompetent to do.
The same generality applies to smaller cheatings. If you cheat enough to get a D in a class you know nothing about, you are getting credit for something you don’t do. A class isn’t as big as medical school, so it’s harder to observe the effects, but the effects would be similar. If you moved onto a more advanced class based on the first class, you would not actually be prepared. In fact, in this situation it could easily fall to cheating every year until it’s much the same as our first situation.
In this manner it is harmful to all. Our most moral man will not cheat because it harms others, yet as it harmful to oneself our most selfish man will not cheat either, given that he is aware of the consequences.

Yeah, if you cheat your way through medical school it's morally wrong because others will be relying on you. If you cheat your way through your high school Macbeth test? Who cares. It's ridiculous and will never come up as useful in your own life outside of a random trivial pursuit question and no one's life will be relying on this knowledge.
Personally I'm always more than willing to assist someone in cheating off of me if I feel I know the answers and will not get caught doing so. I understand the test and class I am taking amounts to nothing. What if it's an essay test and I happened to study the Naploeonic wars pretty good (or just retained the knowledge from class) while my classmate happened to concetrate more on Britains trade throughout India and their economic progress as an empire, but the test happens to be based around my field. Because I lucked out, I get to get the same grade as some sap who studied EVERYTHING and worried himself sick, and this other person who studied something else extensively that IS related to the class fails? It's ridiculous. None of it will matter once I get my generic degree I will be able to get a job easier that will incorporate less than 5% of the information on every single test I have taken after 4th grade.
