I have a friend who is quite intelligent and a university grad, major in poli/sci,minor in economics and yet he still believes in god. He's quite capable of using his critical intelligence for assessing different political theories and their consequences and yet seems to be incapable of using this critical capacity to see that god is a human fiction. He's a christian and when I ask him what happened to all the poor folk that had the misfortune of being born prior to J.C. and forced to live an entire existence under different religeous teachings(Egyptians,Aztecs,Myans,Babalonians, and countless other billions of humans born, raised and died in nameless caves, huts, and villages) he doesn't have an answer and doesn't see the incongruity in the sheer randomness of being born at a time that has christian teachings. How can someone cut off thier critical capacities like that?It baffles my mind.I suppose this question applies to all religeous believers, intelligent or not.

Just because you believe in God doesn't mean you believe in everything the Bible or whatever you stemmed from.
Personally, I find it illogical not to believe in God. How did existence come from nothing? How could something start without anything around to start it? It just seems to point to a supernatural entity that exists outside of our laws of physics and even logic.

Faith belief god meh its all theories....21% Voted for by Defenestra, -TheLoneWolf-, christopheshea.
belief is belief i suppose no matter how intelligent you are you still have beliefs. i believe in evolution simply because it seems to me to have the best evidence to support it, and possibly becasue i find the idea of god ludicrous. thats my belief, its not dangerous and it is far from radical and neither is your friends it just happens to be contrary to your belief. belief is generally illogical to those who dont believe in the same thing. if i was a christian i would have to ask how can you not believe in god? because logically it would seem to me that he or she must exist. however as i dont believe in god i ask how can you believe in god? belief cant be helped just look at hypochondriacs (think thats how you spell it).

god as you know it21% Voted for by trashed, mysinfulAmadeo, Back to Crystal.
doesn't exist. the bible is complete kak- all holy books are- just spin and political crap from centuries ago. but.... i believe that there are things going on that we don't comprehend, that are maybe too big for us to see... the evolution theory theory makes sense. of course it's true up to a point. i hope the next development comes within my lifetime. it seems as if humanity is inching towards truth. hmm, i wonder............ global warming or enlightenment, which will come first?

Simple AnswerVoted for by Makessenseright.
Jesus was a Jew, more than two thirds of the Bible is Old Testament, before Jesus. Those who believed in God before Jesus was born, but trusted that God would provide Him are in Heaven now. Your friend may not be putting his mind into his faith. That doesn't mean that what he believes is wrong. That would be like me saying that evolution is wrong because you can't answer all my questions. The logic just doesn't work. I'm a Christian, and I believe I have the answer to most of the questions you could ask. The last few questions that I can't answer, as you said we have to say "I don't know" but I'll add that I plan to know soon. So I think it comes down to a choice, do you want to believe in God or not? I think the only way to live a life with hope, purpose, and confidence is to accept God.

it is amazing that people can develop in mathematics or science and still not develop in understanding religion..or they just accept religious dogmas without thinking deeply about the subject..but it does happen..there are a lot of mormons out there that fit this description.there may be some truth in what they believe but the book of mormon is an extremely shallow work.

Faith, another definitionVoted for by Null.
Intelligence? really, what is gained from using one term that man today does not comprehend in order to define something that is not even slightly related to that disputable fact that a person might be intelligent. Rather Logic, if we were to use the definition of something we do have a somewhat brief and shallow comprehension of and no, it is not logical, nor is man.
In this existance of extreme ignorance and oblivion man is nothing but a man in a wheelchair, and even though he might never learn to walk he will use his wheelchair or to move around, to observe the surrounding but he will never have the same acces as one able body. Because this world is not adapted for our comfort and our sense of logic, the universe shows clear hints - that even we do not find it hard to discover - that we're not here to conquer it, we're not even slightly near the highlight of it. More like we are just observers, in the sense of a blind man watching the theatre or going to the cinema. we're their and we're smack in the middle of it, still we dont experience everything. We form our own opinion of the event although we couldnt see all the bits and pieces, and likewise is faith and you see how logic prooves itself as its opposite pole.
Faith is not trying to get out of your wheelchair and trying to walk a few steps with legs unable to do so, it is not trying to run with crutches still. It is acceptance of that we are lost in the vast spaces, Understanding that there might be aspects of ourselves that are indeed divine or with capabilities of deeper logic but still restraint from these things that are beyong us, Repsect is our offering and our own way to show this that is within us even the slightest appreciation of it's existance.
Most people i would belive cannot accept the existance of faith, because they want to walk, but there are few ignorant enough to deny it.

I agree
Allthough I gave up the whole christianity thing quite some time ago, I do have my beliefs in a great Divinity. I wholeheartaly agree with the point you are presenting here. But I guess that some people would rather give into believing that there is a "all powerful" supernatural being out there. Rather than spend eons trying to prove it other wise.November 30, 2007
