the usefulness of sex

  • some interesting points there guys

the purpose for sex, or what it was intended to be for, was to reproduce. while we still use it to reproduce as well as other methods (someone referred to test tubes), over time it has become modified expanded and has gained more uses. i agree with pangur in the point that we are driven by animal instincts. in fact there are only two kinds of animals that have sex for pleasure, humans and dolphins. but thats just one classification to many. and when people say that we are "above animals", its purely pertaining to species. in some aspects we are higher than most species of animals.

however, i dont see how it can be said that we have sex purely for pleasure when quite obviously population continues to grow and more and more people are looking for ways to have children. and even if sex were initiated based on pleasure, thats not bad. in fact it is a use for sex - to fullfill. pleasure is something useful or beneficial to us that happens to make us feel good. therefore sex has become useful in means of obtaining pleasure and fullfiling desire. like Weydon said, its pefectly fine as long sa its done responsibly.

sex has also been viewed as a great workout. it burns calories, releases hormones, as well as relieving stress. not to mention that chemicals in your body are released keeping your skin nice and giving off a natural glow. so a good responsible pattern of sex is actually keeping us healthy.

in response to NeferMaatNetjer, sex is enjoyable and good when married. it is also enjoyable and good outsde of marriage. my parents had sex and i was concieved, but they were not married. and all the while since ive been growing up they have not been married but are still together. therefore marriage is not required to have good enjoyable productive sex. its based on the person as to whether or not sex is better in marriage or outside no matter who has expirence in what.

  • outlived it's use?

In one sense, yes it has. the original purpose of sex was to reporduce but thanks to the miricles of modern science we can create "test tube" babies without the need for intercourse.

But sex itself is still needed, the hormones drive us to it, but it is an act of fullfilment that we can't shake. This pleasure is a form of natural conditioning, we enjoy the sex (which would then result in babies if we forget contraception for now) and as we enjoyd it, its positive re-inforcement - we'd do it more which equals more babies.

But this does not mean that people are deluded if they have sex purly for the pleasure of it. This is where you can consider humans "above" other animals, as we have learned to take pleasue in what we do rather then adopt a mindless eat-drink-sleep-shag-cycle of most animals.

  • Purely scientific veiw of sex

Au contrair to everyone who states that sex is only needed for reproduction. Geneticists beleive that sex is nessicary for all species that practice it, for the recombination and variation of genes in the offspring. Without sexual intercourse and the process of gene recombination through meiosis, a species would never be able to evolve and adapt with time, therefore securing the place of a species in the future.

Just some purely scientific veiws for thought.

  • sex is good, enjoyable and needed for the preservation of the species

sex, within the confines of a marital relationship, is healthy, enjoyable, and good for the creation of new life. Sure you CAN make babies in test tubes nowadays, but that takes all the fun out of it, and is not the natural way. Pangur, judging by your opinion, i say you seriously need to get laid.

  • sex has outlived its use

everyone who indulges in sex (especially using birth control) is deluded and driven by purely animal instincts. i wouldn't mind this, but then people say humans aren't animals- we are 'above' them somehow. but no, i think you'll find that you respond to hormones exactly the same as an animal- by shagging.
