What makes a good book?

I am trying to reach my goal of reading at least 500 books during the summer. I personally have read books that are and books that arent too good... I want to read good in depth books... I need to know what books are good and in depth... Then the reasoning of why the book is a good one to read.. I have the above university level ability of reading books, so about any book I can read and understand...

  • Bible

Most read book ever, even if you don't believe it you should at least know what it says, it has had more influence on our world than any other piece of literature ever written.

  • SOPHIES WORLD

A perfect book really as it is basically a beginers guide to philosophy. It is written by a swedish man but I cant remember his name. I have been told that it is required reading if you are a philosophy student. Personally I found that I couldnt put it down but that it encouraged me to question everything

  • One Child

Now One Child is on my top list of good books. It is about a teacher who gets all of the kids that no one else wants to deal with. During her teaching years, one girl who is obviously abused in every sort of way goes in the class.. After a long while of coaxing the girl to be involved, the disturbing part comes in, where her uncle wnated sex but he wouldnt fit in her, so he got a butterknife and cut her all up in the inside... Later on, the girl is adopted by the teacher and they live happily together now... The only thing is that book may scare people into reality of what really happens in the world today and you never notice. I like it because the girl is a survivor of abuse. It is a tough/deep book, but very good...

  • Rachel's Tears

I'm just in the middle of it and it is awesome. It's the story of one of the victims of the Columbine Shootings. It was written by her parents and has stuff from her personal diary, it is deep and moving.

  • A Few Suggestions, Actually

Here's Three Books That I think are artistic, philosophical, and just plain cool:

The Gay Science, by Friedrich Nietzsche: This book is one of the deepest and most personal records of a human being's deepest philosophical and emotional ideations. The incandescent splendor in the wealth of idea and food-for-thought is almost unmatched. Nothing is wrong and nothing is right when you truly are a free-spirited, unnaffected, beautiful person like Nietzsche...although even he had his imbecilities.

The Idiot, by Fyodor Dostoevsky: Similar in mood and expression to The Gay science, but in novelistic form. This russian-born, christian author is not only genuine in his belief, but intelligent enough to understand the necessity of free-thought in the form of a character of immense spiritual removal and sensible nonsense. It expresses that in a world overrun by corrupt ill-mindedness and absolutism, "a sanotorium is the only place for a beautiful person".

Truth & Beauty, by Ann Patchett: This last book is a nonfiction personal re-enactment of the author's undying relationship with a friend severely tortured by manic bi-polar disorder. It provides an inside look at the depth and limitless possibilities of friendship as well as the truest account on bi-polar disorder ever embodied in a novel. It's language is moving, it's story is touching, and it even provides a sense of humor for our all-too-serious nature. A beautiful book and a pleasant read.

  • A Good Book Makes You Good

A good book should increase your awareness to understand other human beings and to love them like your own family.
