I'm curious what some of you think about the takeover of Hawai'i by USA. The president at the time was disgusted by it and it seems to me to be also an unjust act. But what about now? There are many organizations who want to break away or at least be able to govern themselves. Should anything be done about it? And what about the fact that their islands are being ravaged by thousands of people flocking to own their share of the land?

I think if the real estate frenzy could be moderated better and Hawaiians could afford to live on their land that would help many things. Also, if there were a way to give Hawaiians some sort of self governing rights similar to Native Americans that were realistic then go for it.

if i were Hawaiian, I'd be more worried about losing my land to the Japanese then Haoles.

The president at the time- Harrison- didn't oppose it the take over, nor was he disgusted by it. He ENCOURAGED it.
Part of the reason the U.S. "took over" was to protect Hawaii from the Brits and the French. Yes, of course, the U.S. had interest there- but it wasn't colonized. (Not in the sense that the mainland was colonized).
Hawaii didn't become an official U.S. State until 1959. But was made a territory in 1900. Puerto Rico is a U.S. Territory as well.
I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say, "their islands are being ravaged". Can you give an example?
