Why don't people think for themselves?

If we're all following, who do we follow? If not one person is thinking for themselves, who are we following? Why can't people just live for themselves, understand that others are living for themselves, and just accept the fact that we are all different?

  • Knowledge is forced upon us

we are taught from a young age to follow the rules and not question authority. The time comes where everyone breaks out of this and have to fend for themselves, but are left lost because they don't know how to govern themselves without any rules.

  • thinking takes effort

thinking takes effort, and an admission that you are actively involved in the world around you. simply doing as you are told releases you of all unneccisary effort and having to assume responsibility. that's why so many people prefer it.

  • my opinion

I wrote a poem about this just two days ago. In my opinion it's laziness and fear that causes people to cling to other peoples beliefs and ideas. Sheep mentality that is what it is pure and simple. So much easier to let others do the thinking and make the decisions. Too much effort to use brain power ...senseless waste!

  • We aren't aware of our prejudices

I love the quote, "Most people believe they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices." I think that that is the reason no one thinks for themselves, they aren't aware they aren't.

  • Responsibility.

Thinking for yourself would mean having to take responsibility for your actions, and people don't like responsibility.

  • Fear of Social Unacceptance

People are constantly thinking for themselves and creating their own opinions in their minds. The issue, however, is that they do not share their ideas with the world. Probably the most widespread cause for this 'intellectual secrecy' is the fear of their ideas not being accepted and the creator of those ideas being mocked for their unorthodox mindset.
