Do I Exist

It all depends on who "I" is

  • You Have a Soul

You have a soul. That is for certain. Here is why: you think, dream, remember, touch, taste, hear, smell, and see. Nothing you see is real: it is perception, and the colors you see are perceptions of wavelengths of energy (green is not real). You hear by interpreting vibration in the air. There is no sound. There is no smell, there is no sight, there is no bitter, sweet, sour, there is no pain. Everything we view, we view as perceptions of what is real. Our whole world is made of interpretations, and not the real atoms jiggling in our keyboards. All of these things that we remember and experience are not physical things but are represented through physical things. Therefore, all of which I have just described that makes our soul is not physically real but is of something else. Some say our souls are an illusion of what matter particles are doing, but I am intrigued to wonder on other possibilities. For the moment, though, I can easily say, you exist, as does everyone, at least, as an illusion, if nothing more.

  • just a question?

so do you think that it is possible for something without any cellular structure to have consciousness?

  • DO I EXIST

i've always thought Descartes was pretty strange to bother with such a ridiculous question as "do i exist". Now if you define "i" in terms of some kind of an everlasting identity such as an ego that's worth talking about. maybe our individuality as human beings is a temporary identity necessary at the physical level of existence and that identity will indeed die. So is the soul the same as an eternal ego? good question! unfortunately most people's concept of life after death is nothing more than that! Soul however can be something very very subtle..in buddhism there are the dualist as opposed to the non dualists. The dualists believe that the soul always remains separate from god even though it is the same in quality as god while the non dualists believe that the soul merges into god and disappears just like a drop would merge into the ocean and cease to be a drop..the experience of the dualist and the non dualist however would ultimately be the same if you really go through the steps so i think the whole question is irrelevant..the knowledge of what can be experienced as pure soul is not available to anyone on this planet! i've also heard the "individual soul" vs. the "collective soul" argument and it seems like the same one.

  • You are real, but you do not have a soul.

What are we to say what reality is? It is a basic understanding that all things that we sense are happening, and if they were not, then they simply would not be, so, in my opinion, as far as I know, this is as real as it gets, regardless of how real it actually is.

And also, I cannot believe we have souls, what we feel is based of of various nerve endings and recepters in and on our body, and these things react with chemicals in your brain to form what you know as reality, and when you die, you die, it is like a machine that is broken, except you cant repair it. This is the basis on organics.

  • another aspect

I think this question goes even beyond body and soul debate. What your identity is taken away in the sense that nothing changed except except that other believe that you are dead. For example: all your documents are taken away and you are believed to have died in an accident by mistake. There is no one who could indentify you by your appearance or confirm that you are not dead. So for others you stopped existing, but for yourself you still do.

  • Existance
Well, I'd hope you were real.
If you weren't, then how might 'you' have created this topic, or anything 'you' have done?
We can't just be figments of our imaginations, for we'd still be something of ourselves, which proves that there is existance.

Yet, I'd have to disagree with Fall-Sideways-Out. I do believe in souls. Something that generates a body, a being, and any creature.
Ah, and some scientifical person might say "Well, the organs of that creature keeps it alive!"
"And what might be powering those organs?" I'd ask them.
There has to be some sort of presence in us; in our creation and existance.

And, yet, a soul is an intangable force. An esence of something greater, I suppose.
Notice I feel strongly about this subject?

  • I exist.
Purely because I react and respond to my environment. Which is why I think abortion is murder: That baby, no matter what age, can cease to respond to its environment and react to changes.

  • I think therefore I am
Its our knowledge that makes us certain that we exist and unfortunately all we know is what we've been told. We've been told that the sky is blue, therefore it is. If this holds true than we can not determine our existence on this earth at all. It could possibly be an illusion, but then again it could be our own minds entertaining us...
