  the usa, ugly dogs and freedom
  if you have a government and that government makes a law can you then say you are realy free. being free is alot like being a vergin once it's gone it isn't comming back. once we as a people get togher and say thou shall not kill. isn't that a form of oppression. maybe my naighbor needs killing. maybe his dog is realy ugly and he whares white shoes before labor day. once you as a socity decides it isn't ok for me to kill my naighbor because of his ugly dog you have taken my freedom away.

  I believe it depends on what you call freedom. I think when it comes to aquiring as many freedoms as possible in this non-perfect world, then the USA is leading.

  Good point Energizer, but as an American I'd just like to say I feel Canada has it better in many respects :) But aside from that...I'm actually not too familiar with other government policies outside of the UK!

  I believe only to a certain point are we free. They give us rights, but find loop poles to basically have us still under there control. Kinda like giving a mentally challanged person a gun and expect him not to shoot it. another example. My old school, I have freedom of speech, but everytime I had something to say. I was aquitted. I wasn't allowed because they didn't want to hear it...or, I couldn't wear someting because they didn't believe it was right, yet I have the freedom of expression. see what I'm saying? Only a few; minor examples of the taintedness. The system is screwed. simple as that. What kind of freedom is that?

But some measure of deprivation is necessary or we'd all end up killing each other. If I had complete liberty to do whatever I wanted, you would have no liberty. I could chose to do whatever I wanted to you.

If a person lives in a society, that society has rules (ethics, morals) in order for that society to function as a society, so a person gives up some of their freedoms in order to live in that society. As time went on those rules were made into laws by people who were elected to make those laws, so again we gave up some more of our freedoms. So yes, within the constraints of our society, as long as we have the freedom to elect our rulers and our election system is not corrupted we can regard ourselves as free. But when our governments forget they are elected by the people to manage the countries affairs for the good of the people then our freedoms can be whittled away. Nowadays governments, at all levels, are no longer governed by these rules, they are governed by who has the most money, who pays the biggest bribes, who has the most clout and "how long can I stay in power". So, we, the people are losing our freedoms. We are being dumbed down by TV, by propaganda, by bad education so that we will accept what is done to us.
