A statement by Voltaire. What does everyone think?

Let's clear things up a bit.

Alright people, this quote is an analogy. Unfortunately, many of you seem to be taking it literally [which is a common error amongst religious folk, but I digress]. Voltaire is not calling God a literal comedian; he is not insinuating that God toys with us for our amusement, is anything less than Almighty, nor is Voltaire trying to belittle God's followers. Voltaire is making a philosophical observation about those who follow God, which ironically presents itself in some of these comments. People are too freaked out about God. They mistake mindless submission for holy reverence. We are called to follow God and His Will, not to live in fear and tiptoe around anything to do with the Almighty. If you don't see the difference, then you are part of the observation that Voltaire was making.

The quote is a simple metaphor, used to illustrate one man's *opinion* about something he has observed.

  And yes, I agree with your analysis. The Bible talks abour fearing God, but I get the feeling that sometimes people experience/cultivate the wrong /sort/ or fear.

If god exists, as is presented in the bible, then this statement doesn't hold true, 'very' or otherwise. However, if you consider the potential for the existence of a god outside of the Bible, or the Koran, or any other established book proclaiming to speak the word of god, then this statement is potentially true, though 'very' doesn't ever come into the equation.

The facts are in
God is not a comedien although I think that he has a great sense of humor. God made a donkey speak with a man's voice to get someone that was supose to be following God back in line. I think that's very funny. I wouldn't be laughing if it was me that he was talking to. God wants us to be happy with the life that we are given, but that comes with a price. All this is to show God that you want to go to heaven. If you don't want to, you can do whatever you like, but lessons are going to get taught whether it is directed towards you or you just happened to get in the way of someone else. Everyone doesn't deserve to go to heaven. Most deserve the fact that they get. I deserved the fact that I was given. No one else is responsible for what I did except for me and I except that gladly because I want to go to heaven. There are lesson that I had to learn and am still learning to make me a better person. I want to go to heaven and whatever I go through, those stand up shows that your referring to is to help everyone with that.

Free choice
God create us in His likeness - with free choice. We have a very simple choice - A or B. It is as simple as that - it is the bottom line. Nothing is going to change it. Perhaps we are not laughing because we instinctively appreciate the consequences of a wrong choice. You have a brain, logic, intelligence. Do you wish to be treated as something that cannot think e.g. rationalise e.g. an animal. Do you want God to wipe your backside as well. Time to get real. Be an adult with a modicum of intelligence. Its a tough world - and a tough decision - but life can be good.

Does God Have a Sense of Humor

He can laugh joyously. Joy is very different from plain ol' happy feelings and sometimes gets you laughing much more. From my own experiences with laughter; the joyous kind is much more fun to experience. Just the way I feel it, guys. Yes God may have a sense of humor, but He takes His family seriously, just as we do our own families. Being the ultimate superdad, such as God is to us, means being serious about our well-being, being proud of us when we do positive things.

Who exactly is God's family? Do you have to be of a certain religion to be in God's family? If he was protective of us, why would he let us go through such horrible torture daily? It is my belief that God is not laughing joyfully, but rather he is laughing sadistically. He is not laughing with us, enjoying our accomplishments. He is laughing at us. There is not much joy left in most of the world to laugh at. I think he laughs at our pain.

No religion at all
Religion is a practice of rituals. I am not religious, but I do believe in the relationship I have with my Father and His Son and the power that binds them as one, with the Holy Spirit. God shows us things that make us fall in love with Him. We read our Bible every day, because we cannot wait for the chance! We should be, excited and in love with our ultimate superDad, Abba, Father. We read and we pray(conversation)because we desire it, not because we have a ritual to practice daily. God is our passion, our first love and we should all have a chance to, love Him more than anyone else, we will know. ----- God created a perfect world, man made a choice to mess it up and continues to make bad choices. God is fixing our mistakes, as we continue to make them. That is why the flood, that is why Jesus died on the cross and arose. So we could get closer to Him the Father. We chose to turn from Him, He has chose to invite us Back, by sacrificing His Son. It is ultimately our choice to live eternal On the reborn(not new) Earth or absence of God our Father. We are the children, come to Him as a child would, come to his physical parents for answers. In the sense that, we trust them totally, like we once did long ago when we really were children. ------ Think back DryIce808; when was the very first time you realized that your parents could make mistakes and were not perfect parents.....Go to God believing, He is your perfect Parent and start from the beginning again. ----- [B] Re-learn from the best Father of all, how to: [B\] Love and show love, for there are many ways to love many. Forgive and feel pity for others. See inside of other people, know them by there actions. understand their intentions. The eyes of another are the windows to their soul(mind). Learn what kind of Love to have, for those who are against you. Learn how God will lead us to our best possible destiny, in life. We have to experienced Him, therefore we can know His kindness and love, which compells us to know more about Him.

we are all Gods family
God is the Holy Spirit and Holy Spirit is the Son. Just as my earthly father gave a part of himself, such am I, a part of him also. Angels(messengers) they are created beings, but not above us; they are our brothers. We are all Gods children and so are those who wish to remain outside the Family. That is their choice and we should respect their choice. We should judge no one for it is God who judges. For those who are seated by God and man, as judges of court; should be guided by His hand alone, in their judgement. God would not laugh at us sadistically though. Fathers usually find their childrens pain, personally painful also. Even a wayward child that gets into bad things, is still loved by the parent. God is ultimate love. A love that I personally have felt and many others have felt.

We know this by......
our spirit self. According to the greek; we know it in our hearts. A broken heart translates to the original meaning of that phrase: broken spirit. I know He is my Father, because I feel Him, I experience Him and all He promises in His Words, always comes true. The key to knowing Peace, is to believe it is not speculation, but logical fact. Logistics are a trait of my linear personality, so when I accept something as truth, it must be scientifically plausible or I will trash it. I have been studying the Bible all my life, as well as dabbling in; Hebrew text, greek, arabic and aramaic, latin, catholicism, Denominations, Bibliography, physics and chemistry. Plus much more. After 41 years; I have found no argumant against Gods existance that holds water. Only logic and truth. After so much study and such a long time doing it; you come to realize how logical it all really is. Like Jesus said though; if you come to Him with a closed heart, you will only see and hear confusion and silliness(illogical), no matter how much you study. -_-_-_-_-_- The key is to be, open hearted, not just open minded. ----- Notice that Makessenseright said "God is so sweet"? He can say that, because he has felt Gods love utterly. He know without any doubt that God is there for him at any time or event in his life.

I dont think so

I believe that no matter what we are people of his creation whether we see it or not, and whether scientists can prove it. But if you think about it, God knows everything. Everythought, every person, hope dreams and desires. Then so he is not a comedian. Their is no comedian their is only god and his creations. Which he practicly makes the world work with everything in existance. There for hes the audience, and were the comedians as one. For he is the one speculating and clapping or booing. This is a very complicated debate.

The faithful, utterly believe that without our Father; the family would fall apart. Just because our Father gave us laws(including scientific laws and physics) does not mean that the family will make it without Him. Parable: an earthly physical family can easily fall apart, without a head of household. Even though they know the family guidelines or laws.

First off, why the term 'father'? If anything it should be the mother, as in "mother nature." Fathers do not have nearly the same roll in a child's life as mothers do, at least most often. Without the mother, most families do fall apart. Without the father, in many families, it is just financial support that is lacking. Either way, parents are not necessary for survival, especially in todays world. They ensure safety, and possible good upbringing (depending on the parents), but people do not simply shrivel up and die if they lose their parents. You and many others assert that this would happen without a God. I am saying that this is groundless.

Possibly sometimes, but he has his reasons. God needs his laughs, nevertheless, He wouldn't hurt us just to get a good chuckle. He'll always have his reason behind it. For God is more clever than we sometimes think.

What was said in the Chat Box
I read the Chat Box and confusion on the part of the protagonists seems to be the major factor. But I got the following questions out of the above: Does God exist? If God does exist can he hate an individual? If God does exist and if he loves all of us and because we are created in God's image, should we not love all our fellow beings? If God does exist does anyone know what He/She/It really thinks?

The audience would laugh to itself

In order to interpret Voltaire's statement, I belive it is important to point out what the source of laughter is in a comedy - either the personality of a character or his actions. God is an extreme character because it is believed in his perfection. Thus, laughing to the idea of God would mean laughing to human beliefs. God is a creator - he craates imperfect humans and puts them in imperfect situations. Thus, laughing to the acts oh God would mean laughing tho the imperfections of the world and humans. Therefore, in both cases, the idea deduces to humans laughing to themselves. That is why the audiance is too afraid to laugh. Ofcoure, there are people who don't believe in God, but as I interpret it, they woulden't even be the part of the audience to which Voltaire refers.

I'm Afraid To Laugh

I love that quote and find it quite hilarious, but at the same time I find it hard to laugh at it because it's about God and making fun of Him. And that basically proves the quote, doesn't it? I'm an audience too afraid to even laugh at that quote.

God is a kid and we are his dolls

I've been so confused about God and religion
Nowadays when i think about God and his power, how he knows and plans our live before we're even born, it makes me think of a kid controlling her dolls in a doll house.

see, the kid can act out the dolls' lives making them happy, having tea parties and such (for her comical pleasure) OR she can stomp on the doll house and bring saddness to the dolls' live (for her comical pleasure)

i don't know. sometimes I think of God in that way. if he was such a nice God and had a reason behind killing people, what was the point of it? think of holocaust, natural occurences like floods and tornadoes and hurricanes, and war especially. for what reason are these things happening?? how does this make God such a great God? i don't get it.

Convince me that i'm wrong for saying this part of my opinion. otherwise i'm agreeing fully to the quote.

i dont think its possible for anyone to have comPLETELY understood God by now

in fact, we may not ever understand him; at times we dont understand ourselves or things around us, and we SURE as hell dont understand each other (war, et cetera). i think its possible that if God exists he is not some conscious creature that is capable of thought, he would merely need to be a powerful one. i think its possible is some type of energy field and not a powerful guy in the clouds.

and i dont think arguing or door-to-dooring ("have you found jesus" et cetera) will do anything. thatd be like trying to persuade some one what their new favorite color is... its a personal choice and you really cant interfere, despite your sincerest attempts. i think believing in a higher power is a good thing, and if it instills you with faith and trust and makes you a happier person then you are all the better for it

what i dont like is when religion divides, which is the case (on catastrophic levels) more often than not. christians and muslims have slaughtered each other, if you look in the right countries. also, people have shut them down to modern convention and scientific ingenuity, which is pretty much just ignorant

anyway, im not bashing religion. i only bash individuals. and i say "rock on" to any one who finds truth in ANY religion
