'Can a socialist smoke a cigar?' is a famous essay of Bertrand Russell, a well known philosopher.
Now using this question one can analyze various labels.
Humans are labelled in many ways and those labels give them a specific code of life. Due to this they have to live within this code assumed by the society.
Assuming you know about socialism and why cigar smoking, as an expensive habit, was considered a big NO; I pose a similar question to you.
Just because the society labels us woman/man/disabled/etc/whatever does that mean we HAVE to live within the specific codes they provide?
Labels are the biggest rules we ought to break. No one has the right to label us in ANYWAY...

Can you immagine a world without labels? A world without hope and disastor? I agree with you, no one needs to be labled but that is what we, the people, do. And that is how it has always been. For God to be the Savior, we have to be humans, and humans are corrupt. So if we connect the symptosis then the fact of labeling is perfect and cursed in its own form.
If you labeled me, stupid then I would be mad and looking for revenge.
If you labeled me genius, I would want to help you wiith generosity.
And if you labeled me confusing then I most likely would debate about why or why not. So it is all in the meaning. No one deserves to be labeled but then if we wern't their would be no way to seperate each person. We would all be the same size and same shape instead of being fat, slim, tall, short, smart, stupid, genius and intelligent. We would be one boring world, we would have no secrecy without the secrets.
So in the world of no labels I would like to be labeled. Their for I would be unique.
Though in this world, in reality, everyone is a label and everyone is with feelings. So this is a very optional opinion at how you take some of the labels given. And how very understanding you are. Like songs, songs are a perfect label. If we label all of our songs classical, would they be? If all of our songs were classical how could they be if they were just classified but you thought them to be different, how would you know they were different and needed to be in a different category?
but then even the non labeled are named something. "Non labeled" their fore it is categorized. Now what do you think?

Maybe we make our own labels?Voted for by forgottenangel1.
I look around and see all the labels you mentioned and all of the stereotypes and whatnot. Now suppose everything we have today was still here, but without a lable. Would music still be "good"? I mean it would be the same music. But would it be good. I think we as people tend to label ourselves. But none of us are exactly the same. So then would that mean that all of the labels where different.

A great turn to the topic
I must say the previous entry has indeed taken a new turn. I hope you will checking my reply to this. See I am not labels are entirely wrong. However, drawing from your debate the whole concept and difference between categorizing and labeling comes forth. I am telling you this, by imposing a certain label on me I am forced to live so. i am not given the freedom to create a label for myself. Now this is where I think we should work. By living under labels created by many other people I am living a life where I am not me. Why should they differentiate me from another? What use is it? What use is it if I am fat or slim or whatever bullshit? From a personal experience : I put on weight in the past one year. Then I was told that I was ALWAYS a skinny child. Now since I have put on weight everyone thinks that is unnatural. Not like I have bloated up. But nevertheless I got o the doctor once a week and have an array of blood tests. i have been titled a slogger with my studies. Frankly past two years I fel like just taking a hike and leaving behind all my studies. All my tests were low marks... If these people hadn't built these labels throughout my life I wouldn't go through hell. Fine creating labels is human's nature. So I took a month of without any these kind of labels. The only identity for the person I had was their name and how they were related to me. I lived without creating images about them. It worked. I do not create images. Maybe labelling is a wrong word after this turn of the debate. Isn't a world possible without people creating their own fantasy images about someone? I tell you that is not boring. People i have been free without talking with them with an already built image has made me regain so many friends and live a wonderful life. Such a society is possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!May 8, 2006

Labels
Labels will only belive for as long as people belive in them. If you chose to let people label you as you like and label you for all their hearts desire, will that change anything in yourself? Not if you do not belive in these labels.Tweedle Dee

but you have too
Labels is the world. And do you know how hard it would be to ignore them, to believe them is one thing and to not believe them is another, but to IGNORE? Thats like saying someone calling you deaf when you can hear plain as day. I know it would be hard for me.May 30, 2006

Our own labels
Perhaps the problem for so many people is that they allow others to write their labels. I really hate it when people put labels on me or on other people. You know what I mean, you see it in the papers all the time "A middle aged mother of two.....", "An under twenty-five computer whiz.....", "A career minded young woman in her twenties....." when none of these labels have anything to do with what they have done or said. We are being manipulated to respond to what has been said or happened by the labelling. Please register or login to comment! It's totally free
