Can self-esteem and selfishness ever become/seem the same thing?

Self-esteem meaning a good, though not exaggerated, opinion about yourself, self-respect, the desire to keep dignity, and selfishness meaning to put your own needs above all else, neglecting others, not caring about others' needs even if helping them wouldn't affect you. Can they become (or be considered) the same at some point?

  • Guess not.

In my point of view, selfishness can, at some point, seem to be self-esteem, due to the need of keeping a good image for yourself, being careful with your own needs, etc. But I guess it is rather a disguised lack of self-esteem, because someone who respects him/herself will know when/how to care about the others too.

  • Maybe...

I have a friend, who for a long time never stood up for herself, never thought anything good of hereself. But she changed, and after she changed, now shes intensely sure of herself and things shes the greatest thing in the world....to the point of being selfish. She completely disregards people who need a push, or a nice comment (people who are like she was). To me thats selfish. So i guess it's a case specific thing, but at the same time, alot of the time, its interpreted as selfish. At least thats how I see it...
