In Japan, companies generally expect their employees to put in long hours of overtime. But it is difficult for women, who also have household chores to do and children to take care of, to work at the same pace as men, who are not burdened with such responsibilities. Many women inevitably opt for part-time jobs, which enable them to combine work and domestic duties. At present, 23% of all female salaried workers are part-timers and the ratio has been on the rise in recent years.Part-time work places women at a disadvantage. The wages of part-time workers are considerably lower than those of full-time employees, and part-time work tends to involve menial labour. Moreover, because salary and promotion in Japanese companies are often based on seniority, it is extremely difficult for women either re-entering the labour force or switching from part-time to full-time work to climb the ladder.
How is this like or dislike your country?? Compare it to your present day way of life??

America33% Voted for by PheonixTearz, The Blind Bandit.
In japan women are more outcasted than here in America. In American women are already to be in your face, but the fact is it is easier for women here. We can get decnt part time jobs so we can manage a family and chores. Yes it is true though that the average man gets paid 75 cents more an hour than a women in the same position would be getting paid.
Not fair, not just, but better than Japan.

I don't have the statistics at hand, but I'd be willing to believe you described America and replaced with Japan...only you talked about long hours, and not enough women staying home without jobs.

How Can an American speak farely?Voted for by frndofyaweh.
do we really know enough about Japan, even though some of us know quite a bit? I believe, being there is important and experienceing Japan, as the Japanese do, would make for a clearer perspective.
personally; I just do not know enough about Japanese society and culture and have never been there.

hmm....Voted for by cosmosis.
what you said is probably true and i won't argue with you on that. but there is a part of the equation that you left out.
let me start from the beginning which will help clarify my point. in japan, standards for everything are extremely high. students compete vigorously to get into their desired high school (they don't just go to the one closest to them) and usually attend "cram schools" to help them prepare for the "examination hell" that awaits to see which high schools they get accepted into, every thing must be neat and orderly and even in produce stores the milk has 3 different labels, experation date, date it was manufactured and date it was delivered to the store.
because of all this intense competition and high standards for everything, mothers of young children get frantic over trying to get their children to attend as many extra curricular activities/classes as possible such as piano, swimming, calligraphy, abicus, etc. these frantic mothers are often called "kyoiku mama" which is a nick-name that somewhat means "education mama". anyhoo...because the demand of skilled teachers is so high...japanese parents are willing to pay A LOT OF MONEY to prepare their children for their future. because of this, many average, everyday women who have some sort of skill (can play the piano, good handwriting/calligraphy,etc) can set up a little "business" right from their own home and a huge amount of japanese women do this. they get paid very well without ever having to leave their own home.
so even though japanese women may not be treated fairly in japanese companies, they make a good living without ever having to leave their homes and they get paid a good, decent amount of money that could probably compete with the salary of an ordinary business man.
