Drugs to increase sex drive?

Several companies are searching for a “female Viagra,” a counterpart to Pfizer Inc.’s blockbuster male impotence treatment that could help women with sexual problems. Analysts say the market for women could top $1 billion annually.

P&G’s patch, called Intrinsa, is being developed with Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. . The patch delivers testosterone, a hormone involved in sex drive, through the skin.

Two studies showed women treated with Intrinsa had about one more satisfying sexual experience over a four-week period than women given a dummy patch, the FDA reviewers said.

“It is not clear that the differences are clinically meaningful,” said the reviewers’ memo posted at: http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/ac/04/briefing/2004-4082b1.htm

Long-term safety of testosterone therapy is a concern in light of findings that other hormones raised the risks of cardiovascular problems and breast cancer, the FDA reviewers said.

“It is unknown whether the addition of a different hormone, testosterone, might have similar and unanticipated adverse effects,” the memo said.

In clinical trials, Intrinsa therapy was combined with the hormone estrogen.

FDA staff will ask the advisory panel “whether there are unanswered safety questions that should be further assessed pre-approval in appropriately sized randomized trials of adequate duration, or whether these questions can be appropriately answered post-approval,” the memo said.

“Only a very small number of subjects” have been treated more than one year, the FDA reviewers said.

P&G spokeswoman Elaine Plummer said the questions raised by the FDA staff were “what we would expect to be asked and they will be addressed” at the advisory panel meeting.

Panels sometimes, but not always, concur with FDA staff reviews when making recommendations on approvals. The FDA makes the final decision and usually takes the advice of the panels.

P&G is seeking approval to market Intrinsa to women who have had their ovaries removed and are bothered by a lack of sexual desire. In 2005, 2 million women may fall into that category, P&G estimated. The company has not given sales estimates for Intrinsa.

  • More interesting than other drugs

Messing with sex drive seems way more interesting to me than messing with other things like pot (motivation?), E, etc.

Imagine being obsessed with nothing but sex for 24 hours? What a hit!

  • Psycological Problems

I think sexdrive drugs are just a bunch of crap. Usually the reason for people not being able to “get up” is because they have some anger or problem or discomfort or worry about what will happen. So why… why use them? Why not fix the problem and get on with our lives? However—if you really do have a problem in that area, you should ABSOLUTELY talk to the doctor AND a psychologist about it!!!!

  • pass some this way!

Why not? I think it’s great that they are finally coming out with something to help women. If men have difficulty preforming and voila! They can fix it, the same should go for women. Sorry I can’t agree with Buterflispirit, there will forever be stress in everyones lives, common factor. I think it goes beyond that…for medical reasons or maybe after you have children some people just love their drive. Why not help them?

  • knock urself out

whats wrong with having a drug that makes someone want to have sex again? or able to have sex whatever. i just have no idea why someone wouldnt agree with having these drugs, give it a rest, let people enjoy their lifes even if its been altered by a drug, if it makes the person happy let them do it

  • If it works...

If it doesn’t harm you or become an obbsession; I see nothing wrong with them. Otherwise, if side effects outway the good, I say; no way. Me personally: If it quits workin’, then it quits workin’ and I’ll just have to find a new hobby. lol!

  • Sounds okay

Personally I need one that decreases sex drive, but if you need more and it works, great for you! Nothing wrong with harmless, safe sex!

  • How could we know how one really feels!

It is very hard to say, this is crap or this is best! Again one has to find his own unique way. I am not into artificial drugs but more into herbal remedies. Of which I really believe in! I am sure that some of you are saying ’ oh those do not really do anything’ well at least by taken them you will be stimulating the mind with a sort of +ve attitude, thinking, energy and a new hope which might help you to awake some forgotten feeling and enable you to perform better – cause mind you, it is really all in the mind. Also you are not risking to have all the consequences of the side effects since there are none! Also if you are disciplined enough you can just meditate on it and be assertive and +ve on the fact that you will make it happen! Like self-stimulation.

I personally, find a nice Bath with candles and nice music very appealing to me….. Treating your self by eating healthy food on that particular day it is also a good stimulate – healthy food for both thin and fat people will clean your system and make you feel lighter and confident, less coffees will make you less anxious, shopping some sexy underwear, wear a nice perfume, buy some nice things for your bath, candles and incense work perfectly with some soft jazz or love songs…. dim light – and why not a nice glass of red wine which is proven that red wine is good for romance! !

Once a man told me a phrase and since then making love had more sense to me. I hope this can help you as much it did to me – because I really believe that sex – lovemaking is an act of giving and receiving .. Therefore who is involved must be conscious and sensitive to conceder what the other partner would love and need in order to fulfill each other desires.

    The phrase was:

A man needs to make love to relax – A woman needs to relax to make love.

In my opinion if both men and women knew this and work on this will find ways and means how to prepare each other for love making. This dilemma of needs between men and women can only be solved by not ignoring it but understand its concept.

  • I think...
...that sex is not an important factor [to me, at least] in a relationship. Sure, it could be nice, but it is not required. ...for me. I'm sure many would beg to differ.

I would never want my partner to take any sort of crap that messes with his sex drive. I prefer things natural. Also, it would never really be about the pleasure, but the more sentimental things about having sex. I would not be very comfortable knowing that the mood my partner is in was caused by some drug.
