Ok I'd like to know in a logical way who here still believes in the bible 100% and why? If you believe in everything in the bible then do you believe it was written solely by god or by men?

A book of men22% Voted for by IvoryRose, Kei-Aira.
read this, and remember some things in the bible are written by men not god. 1 – When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
2 – I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3 – I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.
4 – Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?
5 – I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
6 – A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?
7 – Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some room for negotiation here?
8 – Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?
9 – I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10 – My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev.24:10-16) Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

Bible?22% Voted for by KarmaChild, Gwen -high5-.
The bible throughout history has been changed and altered to fit the majority, not the minorty... males are shown as great people and the women tend to be the sinners...should you be bashed upon for being female?...all other religons are discmitated against...if god loved everyone then why would he punish you for worshiping him another way or in another light?...The bible says we should stone a sinner to death...why would god incourage one to kill and thus sin them selfs to be kiled by others?

A game of chinese whispers22% Voted for by Sir William Wolf, Kei-Aira.
Who here believes In Vampires? ... They are a mythical creature made entirely out of imaginations .... Yet - there is more evidence stating that they exist than there is of there even being a God.
I'm christian and don't get me wrong I believe in heaven and hell but you can not tell me that Jesus walked on the Earth. A book that is 2000 years old (give or take a day) speaks of stories that Jesus embarked on and miracles he made. Folk tales are that old for goodness sake.
It is just like a game of chinese whispers, a story is passed down , true or false, and that is passed down and so forth. Each time it is passed it changes ever soo slightly. For instance - It states in the bible that Jesus walked on water - Probably a bit Of an over exagerattion probably just really god on ice-skates.
That Is why I do not believe in the bible 100% but you choose what you believe.

The Old TestimentVoted for by littleoneof-God.
The Old Testiment was for the day and age where people did strange things without God starting them. Do not judge God for putting laws on what people already did. I think a lot of people are too critical of a time where this stuff was common-place, and we have just come so far that we fail to see things clearly through the cloudy veil of time.

God Gave the Bible a LockVoted for by endsofbread.
The bible is not a book that can be understood by men who have no intention of understanding it or any want to know the truth about god. The bible was written that way on purpose. I personally believe that god is powerful enough to make sure that his word (the god-inspired bible) was translated correctly. I believe it was LITERALLY written by men who act as kind of secretaries. Like a business man who asks the secretary to take down notes as he speaks. I do not think men are smart or wise enough to come up with the grand amount of answers and genuine goodness that is comprised in the bible over thousands of years. I mean, who do you have more faith in, man or god? I of course believe in the bible and that it is a good book. I believe any question I have about life can be answered by it and it will surpass any answer i could come up with or any of earth's grand philosophers. it is truly the guide of life for humans. Like a care manual for a car. If you have genuinely read the bible with an open heart and a yearning to understand it, then that is the KEY to opening its true meaning. Too many people read it with a smirk and an underlying desire to undermine what the bible says and prove it wrong. If you don't give it a chance, then how will you ever know? God has put a lock on the bible so that only those who truly want to draw close to him, will.

Old TestimentVoted for by nanrek.
Either the old testiment is fiction or God is a crazy obsessive-compulsive psychopath. I would rather believe it is a fantasy than to believe the world was created by a mad-diety.

2 – I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
Slavery in your Bible comes from an old hebrew word that meant much much more than it does today.
A slave in Bible times was a servant or gardner and was also paid very well and treated like the rest of the household. Slaves could only be kept for 7 years and then they were given their freedom to start fresh and free, with a new optomistic view of life.
3 – I know that I am not allowed any contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence. Lol

No. The Bible also instilled the very concept of judge and jury. You would be convicted of murder I believe.
6 – A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this? Yes. Abomination: to be repulsive. So bad it will make you sick. Not necessarily a sin, but sickening to God and humanity. Shellfish actually do make us physically sick when over-eaten. Yes, some peopel get sick, when seeing others eat them too. makes sense to me.
7 – Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some room for negotiation here? No. Leviticus 21 is a chapter for priests only. Why don't you read the whole book of Leviticus before you take it out of context. The word 'sight' in that verse means, the priests thoughts, apparel and surroundings.
8 – Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?
die??? Again you have taken this out of context, because you failed to read ALL of the story, so you do not know who the verse is even referring to! It clearly states not to trim their beard and hair the same way as the pagans were doing at the time. this simply avoided confusing and kept your head on your shoulders as well as your hair. The believers would have sleign that hairstyle on sight, thinking you were the enemy.
9 – I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? palease, even science has proven this is truth and even in a football game; yes, definitely wash your hands before greeting my family with a handshake.
(Lev. 20:14) Again you seem to be forgetting to read the rest of this book and are getting the concept completely wrong.
The reason was very simple: All commandments are so we stay safe and alive. The crop was grapes by the way and two varieties of grape create a hybrid and also creates brand new diseases on the vines. In modern day we can thwart this, but in those days, the fungus growing on the grapes would not be recognized as a disease and consumed.
You must remember this when reading the laws and commandments(there are more than ten): God made them because they keep us from harm. Many times we were not educated enough or advanced enough, to even begin to understand why God says, do this and don't do that.
combining wool and satin produced ill effects in those days and became a breeding ground for lice.
God had a reason for these rules and it is ALWAYS about keeping us happy and safe in every case.
Sin means: harm, hurt, damage. God loves us enough to guide us away from these things.

Sorry to sound like bashing
I love to teach and sometimes get excited about things. You are in college so, use that library as much as you can and dig deep for that wisdom.
Knowledge is power, but wisdom is the dry cell.
I did find your humorous take original and funny, but couldn't resist the attack mode above. Sorry again,...really.
Reading the Bible is not enough. You should find a Hebrew student-if at all possible-who can help with original texts and Latin/Greek translations as well.
I visit with Doctor Thurston at least once a week and sometimes several a week. He can decipher Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. It does help a bit.
Also we have Dauer here at All Philosophy, when we can get him to pop in for a few. He is taking Judeao Studies at Boston U. and knows all about the holy form of Hebrew and the spoken forms.

But you CAN take it literally...
...and take it from a 1st century POV at the same time. The Jewish lady who wrote the above statements, did take it out of contexts, but if read properly, all of it above is not only literally meant it has hidden agendas for protection and safety, that are designed to protect the innocent or ignorant. Please register or login to comment!
