Is time travel possible?

Do you think it would be possible to go back in time or visit the future? What about the space time continueum?

    Time was the fourth dimension. That means time is a dimension we sense, but do so unlike we do space. If you travel in a straight line at accelerated motions, time for you will tick slower than those not accelerating. This means a time machine could in a sense transform a person into the future. The reverse, backward travel, appears not so easy. The equations require a speed in excess of light to travel retro-time into the past. This rather boogles the mind because it implies the past exists somewhere, maybe in another Universe, but is not accessable to us because no material object may travel faster than light. If you were aphoton of a light beam, traveling at the speed of light, time for you would stop and all distance would shrink to nothing. In fact you could cross the Universe in what seemed to you as no time at all.

    well you’re traveling through time right now! but that’s not what you’re asking about is it? I don’t think you can travel back in time. Our existence is limited in ways. it is impossable to go back, because when that was ‘now’ you would be back there and… it’s hard to explain. let’s just say you would have been meant to travel back in time. not to mention if you could that everything would be screwed up. but you cant change the past and im at a lack of words describing why. but can you speed up? maybe. It’s like A WRINKLE IN TIME (awsome book, and i want to know what a tesseract looks like) where you can take a shortcut. I think your existence can skip forward, but it would be impractical, because the earth is traveling super fast and if you blinked out for just a second and blinked back in a second later, you would be in space, not on earth. but then there’s the whole thing about traveling through time and staying in the same spot, and, what if time is connected with matter and stuff. no one’s probobly reading this anymore anyway… but i like talking about this stuff.

    I bet ‘time’ is like a bunch of pictures. But 3D ones, or 4D i suppose. I think that at any point in time, there is a coresponding ‘picture’. i don’t mean this in a literal sense (because for every momont in the future, a new picture would have to be made and aaah confusing stuff), more of a way to describe time. i don’t believe in destiny, that’s scary. But i think the ‘pictures’ are interlaced and we are too dumb/not equipped to sense them. If i were a stick figure, i would never sense a cube, i might be able to think about it, but nothing more. So i think you can go forward somehow, by just skipping out of existence and coming back in at a different ‘picture’. but i dont think you can speed up/slow down time. after all, we wouldn’t realise it happening would we? because time is universal, and it can’t be sped up for an individual.

  • Yes travel to the past is possible

    You want to travel to the past, huh? Go to a museum, look at a photograph, you are now looking into the past. Some how, our minds came up with a way to view to past, now our minds just need to grab hold, and away we go, think about it, the past maybe gone, but if it is truly gone, then why is there still a picture...

    YES! BUT. We can travel into the future. We can enter a ship and proceed, through space, ttime goes fast. But by the time you turn back to go to Earth, you are old. But, we canNOT (and can NEVER) travel into the past. The past has already happened, you cannot alter it.

    The science fiction time travel is only fiction and creative, not facts.

    Don't you think if time travel was possible we would have run into somebody who had done so from the future and was visiting us which is their past.

    I think that time travel is perfectly possible (perhaps by using a wormhole), how ever, i think it would all work in time loops, not time paradoxes (basically, it would not be possible to change the past because you future self would have done the same in your current time zone, if that makes sense)

    Time travel is Gods design and our curse. Einsteins theory is sound, when Bible(Gods Word) is applied to it. The Bible says: time does not exist in heaven(edge of the universe, where expansion slows to nothing and time does stop).

  • Implausible

    If the future is made my the choices we will and have yet to make, than how is it possible to travel into a future we haven’t yet made? To accept travel into the future would be to accept some idea of fate or predetermined destiny, which I feel implausible.

  • TIME DOES NOT TRAVEL

    Do you really think TIME travels… TIME is nothing but a concept.. in fact it ain’t moving…. So what is moving…. It’s you brother, right now as you read this post a lot of chemical activity is already taking place, neurotransmitters moving here to fro.. it’s all movement that creates that concept of time.. a year is the movement of our earth around the sound.. a month is a movement of the earth satellite.. So does TIME even move.. Have you tracked down how much time it takes to wake up from a bad dream….? Back to the future…great but a big nonsense.. If you are waiting for a train that is still in station one.. would you found the same train in station 10 if you travel through time to get there easily.. do you think you can see any train there.. i doubt it…Man’s problem is his own thought.. he can’t keep on thinking..huh!!

  • Look: The theory was already proven

    As I recall; a super sonic jet, Traveling faster than sound, in the opposite direction of Earths rotation, did slow down time, by a fraction of a second. Do not remember all the specifics, though.

    Einstein had it correct. Time can be stopped. When you shed your physical body and become spirit(light energy) you will travel at that speed and time ceases. Physical Death, is the answer you seek. I am not in any hurry to stop time, yet.

    ponder on this…are the other universes we see in the night sky with highly sensitive telescopes really our world at different times? is it the past? the present? the future? is it the universe which people have theorized is created by each decision you make? i persoanlly believe we will be able to go back in time one day but that is far into the future, just like i believe we will be able to go into the future, but that is very far into the future. we just have to stop limiting our thoughts to our own time and thinking about the other possibilities which sound crazy but could be true.

    i think our constant is a looping cyclic redundancy that our infinity relative to earth has been split either 55 years as we see years or 512 four times each time creating a spatial at a different frequency i think it might be identifiable with the modulation of a simple strobe light. i cant help but think we go back to zero over and over creating a paradox

  • Tiem travel is posible, but not practical

    two thoughts; first Steven hawking said if time travel was possible we would see time tourists time travel is possible but not in the same was as depicted by “back to the future” it is possible in both direction. There is only one catch you cannot move into the future or past for your own time frame. If you move at slow speed at incredible distances (1,000,000 light years) moving away from the earth you would be in the past for our time (maybe around the medieval time) but you would not be able to know about it or experience it, only people in the far future on you planet would be able to even not that you were walking during the crusades. Conversely you can travel into the future the same way walking towards earth. It is not a practical way to time travel because you are not even aware of it. If this has already been said then please forgive me

    Time as we know it, is constant. Einstein and others have theorized that time may exist at different speeds. Fortunately for this world, time is constant. If time were not constant, the universe might be thrown into chaos.

    The atomic bomb might have caused an unending chain reaction like the sun, but we tried it anyway. “Boom, see, I told you I was right.” Lucky us.

    Right now, no. Time travel is beyond our means. But whether it is impossible altogether can't be proven. Just because it's not within our capabilities now doesn't mean it will never be able to be accomplished.

    The equivalence of time travel and faster-than-light travel First of all, if one is able to move information from one point to another faster than light, then according to special relativity, there will be an observer who sees this information transfer as allowing information to travel into the past. The General Theory of Relativity extends the Special Theory to cover gravity. It does this by postulating that matter "curves" the space in its vicinity. But under relativity, properties of space are fairly interchangeable with properties of time, depending on one's perspective, so that a curved path through space can wind up being a curved path through time. In moderate degrees, this allows two straight lines of different length to connect the same points in space; in extreme degrees, theoretically, it could allow timelines to curve around in a circle and reconnect with their own past. General relativity describes the universe under a complex system of "field equations," and there exist solutions to these equations that permit what are called "closed time-like curves," and hence time travel into the past. The first and most famous of these was proposed by Kurt G�del, but all known current examples require the universe to have physical characteristics that it does not appear to have. Whether general relativity forbids closed time-like curves for all realistic conditions is unknown. Most physicists believe that it does, largely because assuming some principle against time travel prevents paradoxical situations from occurring. Using wormholes A proposed time-travel machine using a wormhole would (hypothetically) work something like this: A wormhole is created somehow. One end of the wormhole is accelerated to nearly the speed of light, perhaps with an advanced spaceship, and then brought back to the point of origin. Due to time dilation, the accelerated end of the wormhole has now experienced less subjective passage of time than the stationary end. An object that goes into the stationary end would come out of the other end in the past relative to the time when it enters. One significant limitation of such a time machine is that it is only possible to go as far back in time as the initial creation of the machine; in essence, it is more of a path through time than it is a device that itself moves through time, and it would not allow the technology itself to be moved backwards in time. This could provide an alternative explanation for Hawking's observation: a time machine will be built someday, but hasn't been built yet, so the tourists from the future can't reach this far back in time. Creating a wormhole of a size useful for macroscopic spacecraft, keeping it stable, and moving one end of it around would require significant energy, many orders of magnitude more than the Sun can produce in its lifetime. Construction of a wormhole would also require the existence of a substance known as "exotic matter," or "negative matter", which, while not known to be impossible, is also not known to exist in forms useful for wormhole construction (but see for example the Casimir effect). Therefore it is unlikely such a device will ever be constructed, even with highly advanced technology. On the other hand, microscopic wormholes could still be useful for sending information back in time.Matt Visser argued in 1993 that the two mouths of a wormhole with such an induced clock difference could not be brought together without inducing quantum field and gravitational effects that would either make the wormhole collapse or the two mouths repel each other. Because of this, the two mouths could not be brought close enough for causality violation to take place. However, in a 1997 paper, Visser hypothesized that a complex "Roman ring" (named after Tom Roman) configuration of an N number of wormholes arranged in a symmetric polygon could still act as a time machine, although he concludes that this is more likely than not a flaw in classical quantum gravity theory rather than proof that causality violation is possible. Using massive spinning cylinders Another approach, developed by Frank Tipler, involves a spinning cylinder. If a cylinder is long, and dense, and spins fast enough about its long axis, then a spaceship flying around the cylinder on a spiral path could travel back in time (or forward, depending on the direction of its spiral). However, the density and speed required is so great that ordinary matter is not strong enough to construct it. A similar device might be built from a cosmic string, but none are known to exist, and it doesn't seem to be possible to create a new cosmic string. Physicist Robert Forward noted that a na�ve application of general relativity to quantum mechanics suggests another way to build a time machine. A heavy atomic nucleus in a strong magnetic field would elongate into a cylinder, whose density and "spin" are enough to build a time machine. Gamma rays projected at it might allow information (not matter) to be sent back in time. However, he pointed out that until we have a single theory combining relativity and quantum mechanics, we will have no idea whether such speculations are nonsense. Using Quantum Entanglement Quantum mechanical phenomena such as quantum teleportation, the EPR paradox, or quantum entanglement might appear to create a mechanism that allows for faster-than-light (FTL) communication or time travel, and in fact some interpretations of quantum mechanics such as the Bohm interpretation presumes that some information is being exchanged between particles instantaneously in order to maintain correlations between particles. This effect was referred to as "spooky action at a distance" by Einstein. Nevertheless, the rules of quantum mechanics curiously appear to prevent an outsider from using these methods to actually transmit useful information, and therefore do not appear to allow for time travel or FTL communication. This misunderstanding seems to be widespread in popular press coverage of quantum teleportation experiments. The assumption that time travel or superluminal communications is impossible allows one to derive interesting results such as the no cloning theorem, and how the rules of quantum mechanics work to preserve causality is an active area of research.

  • Yes and No

    Time travel is absolutely impossible. Back to the Future, as old as that movie series is closest to explaining the possibility of time travel. Time travel can exist if and only if upon the travel nothing about reality changes.

    It is possible to go back in time and go to the future but in doing so it cannot change the future or the past. By being in the past you cannot influence the past. By being in the future you cannot influence the present.

    So although it may be at some time possible to travel to the past, you cannot do anything in the past, and although it may be at some time possible to travel to the future one cannot learn anything in the future.

    Although it may be possible to make the transition, it would be impossible to learn anything in the future and do anything in the past. Thus even though it is possible to travel to the future and to the past one cannot accomplish anything in doing so.
