Libretarian society, would it work?

In a liberatarian Society, there are no laws, except that you may not do anything that will harm or potentially harm another individual. In your opinion, would a society like this work, or only in theory, like Communism?

  • Liberatarianism
I think it would work. Other forms of government like communism, and socialism, and even probably a lot of the government in some ways are different from a more liberatarian society because they spend a lot of time trying to sift out what people want. They all seem to try to use social control to govern the people. Basically, it is the government trying to tell you what is best for you; you need to depend on the government more, you need to become an opportunist ect.. ect.. but with a libertarian society the laws are very basic and simple. Their basic rule is keeping the government out of people's lives, unless someone does something to take the freedom from another person (murder, steel, fraud...). I am not entirely against capitalism. If someone works hard and takes advantage of opportunities and owns nice things, then i think people have the right to do that. I think a little bit of capitalism motivates people.
The basics of libertarianism is freedom. the problem is, that with more freedom comes less security. The government needs more controls on us in order to fullfill our 'security needs', and when the government is given that much control, that is when they become out of hand, and i am afraid to say that it looks like our country is headed somewhere bad, unless a little bit of libertarianism gets put into action. Maybe i sound really negative about my country, but a lot of people don't care about freedom. Everyone wants to take the role of being a victim, and less and less people care about having the freedom to stand on their own. And the government (particularily the liberals, though i suppose some republicans have been known to do it too) are more than happy to take up more power. America is full of a bunch of spoiled over endulged wimps who don't like to think, who turn on their televisions, and are spoon fed propoganda by their overpowering government that is rolling in the working class taxes and is trying to find new excuses to tax us. There is nothing wrong with being rich if it is honest. So overall, i don't think libertarians have much of a chance pulling people up for the sake of a truer freedom than the one we presently live in.

  • theory?

Only in theory, not in reality. You have highlighted big rules about "harm". This is a relative concept and as such would create the institutions we have now. In fact, you have described society as it stands, so, Is it working? Maybe it is. Just define reality in one's own terms as one would define liberty or harm. The harmed will attract the harmers and vice versa adfinitum. MAYBE?!

  • Yes.

In theory, I think a liberatarian society would work. As long as there are the basic fundamentals of a country, (Libraries, Hospitals, Roads, Schools, Postal, ect.) I think that people should be able to do what they want. Because, in my opinion, our body is a personal choice of what we do with it. Why stop people from going out and smoking a small amount of marijuana because they need a lifter upper during a particular boring shift? Also, it has been proven, that in Europe, where there is a dramatically lower drinking age, and in some countries none at all, less people drive drunk and drink to get drunk, because it is legal. Opinions?

  • Nope

It would not work for the same reasons communism didnt, and capitalism didnt, and totalitarionism didnt, and all other forms of government dont, some one must be in place to determine what is harm, therefore become a governing body, and with governing bodies comes self interest, greed and corruption.Whats good for the goose is not nessasarily good for the gander. Governing bodies always, and I repeat always make exceptions for themselves, and refuse to accept responcability for the consequinces of thier actions.

Yes it would work, it would in fact be fairly similar to existing society except with more personal and economic freedoms.

  • There would still be RULES
Laws are enforced by government. Rules are enforced by community.

The community is a group of like-minded people. A libertarian society is a type of community. They would still need rules. Also keep in mind that children are not born 'libertarian'. They would have to be molded into that.

The government has laws because there are different communities living among eachother. America needs laws because Jews observe the Sabbath on Saturday but Christians on Sunday. That conflict could never be resolved with rules because their religion would forbid for either one to change their Sabbath day. A war would ensue. Government must step in and declare separation of church and state. ONLY with that separation can Jews live among Christians. There can be peace-- or at least, and understanding of separation joined by a higher power (the State) who can enforce your inclusion or exclusion on the States territory if you violate the law. If a Christian bombs a temple in America because Jews are worshipping god on the wrong day then that Christian goes to jail. (NOTE: this is fear in today's society that Pres. Bush is taking the country backward to excluding all except the Christian White. Hitler on the rise again).
