Why do most people feel so threatened by Christianity?

I've never really heard anyone freak out about Buddist or Muslim or any other major beliefs. It seems that everyone who is not a Christian becomes so threatened by it.

Aside from what Auxilar said about other religions being seen as threatening as well:

I'm a Christian. Most of my family and a great deal of my friends are Christian. But I believe I am in the same boat as the people you think are "threatened" about Christianity. I dare say I almost see them as enemies at times.

The Christians that I and others "freak out" about are the vocal, pushy ones. The ones that hate homosexuals (I know, I know...you love them, they're chidlren of God. You just think they're disgusting and don't deserve to be intimate with the ones they love), say that those that don't accept Christ are going to hell, force God into everyone's pledge of allegiance, condone rampant censorship, think sexual education is the eigth deadly sin, etc.

More so than their beliefs in these things, is their vehemence against it to the point where they're not actually willing to consider alternatives. They'll sometimes pretend they're going to argue with you logically and they have a concrete rationale behind them, but it quickly turns into nothing but condescending comments and using the Bible as a weapon.

These are the Christians I freak out about. I find them theatening because they are hindering progress of society. We both, apparently, believe in Christ and God, but in very different interpretations of Them.

NOTE: I am not going to sit here and debate each of the points I brought up with said Christians. If you want, go to a post already covering the topic or even just make a new one, and I'll debate there.

  • Say what?

The entire of the right wing of the western world is afraid of Muslims at present. The Nazis feared the "capabilities" of global Judaism, just as Eastern European nationalists and American Populists. Major religions are consistently feared at one point or another in history, and much of it persists. Christianity is no different.

As for Buddhism, it has been too intellectual, royal, priestly, and esoteric to even exist in a collective consciousness. It has never been accused of much, just as Nominalism, Franciscanism, or Scholasticism doesn't harbor or endure much enmity on a historical scale.

  • It's quite annoying

when someone knocks on your door trying to preach to you about how you should live your life (door slams in face!). I won't type words that criticise other peoples faith that is their choice but when people turn on me and say you should do this because God says this and that or the Bible says the other it winds me up.If people want to preach in towns were I can choose to listen or walk past as I see fit good on them for having the balls to do it. But don't come preaching on my doorstep your invading my space!!

Jesus lived, I believe that. Mohammed lived I believe that. They were probably both very Human with great ideas about how to live together in a peaceful society. What I cannot understand is why people insist I should follow the rules of a book written by other Humans not God. No matter what you say there's no proof any religious texts are written by whoever or whatever created the universe. But if we look at our own minds that we were blessed with by this creator we have common sense, we know in our hearts and minds what is wrong or right.

Breathe in, feel the peace and unity that an open mind can bring.

By open mind I don't mean we can condone murder or rape... that violates people, it's so obvious!! It's frustrating. We can however decide to honour each others lives by showing respect, being honest showing generosity to our neighbour.

Greed, power, vanity, are everywhere in society especially in religions. Why do priests have altar cloths that cost a fortune??? 1 example, I don't need to waste time thinking of more if your honest with yourself I'm sure you can think of them.

If I am living my life as a good, honest, hard working, considerate, respectful person God will be happy. No matter my colour sex or sexuality.

Life's about evolution. Learn from the past don't get stuck in it.

Religion is a cause for the fall of unity in man. Not the only cause but a big one. This is why I feel threatened not only by Christianity but by religion as a whole.

because they sense the power, and they don't know how to deal with it,because then they would have to reconsider all their beliefs and principles.

I think it might just be because they are afraid of the truth, or maybe of what the truth can mean. Truth sometimes hurts, especially when so many lies have been taken as truth.

  • hmm

Im a 17 yr old guy, i am not, in any way, religious

the main problem i have with christianity is that i cant see the sense in it, god hasnt been witnessed in any physical form as far as i know for over 2000 years, so all we have to go on is a load of very old books, books can be written by anyone. another reason i dislike religion is the amount of pointless violence that has been carried out in the name of (insert deity here). of course, what really annoys people, especially young people is being told what to do, religion tells people what to do, infact, it would probably be easier to rewrite the bible to tell people what they can do. i dont know exactly what the christianity says about destiny, but i know when a really bad thing happens to a person, theres always the F***ing annyoing bible basher that comes up and says "its all part of gods plan" again, the young person particularly hates to think that they are not in control of their own lives, they want to think that there was a "real" reason for something happening not just that god thought it would be a good idea.

    Something else to think about....

i dont believe there is a god, all races have a form of religion, its imprinted into our brains, people use this as an argument that there is a god, going along the lines of, if so many different cultures that had never even been in contact with eachother all had some from of religion, then there must be some kind of god out there. i think of it in a different way. look at all the seperate religions, most have a tottally different views. for example many religions believe tht there are multiple gods, not just one. i believe that religion as its self is, or maybe just was, needed by humans to help them cope with their state of life. its often that a non-religious person will turn to a religion for support in times of extreme crisis, afterall, it makes you feel warm and fuzzy to think that you will go to a land of eternal happiness after your hard and most probably pointless life ends. i was watching a science program recently, humans are the only animls able to comprihend that their own death is inevitable, we all know we're going to die, so why not invent a convinent little fantasy to help us cope with that information?

most of what christianity for example, teaches is good moral ethics to live by, some of these teachings are not really required anymore of course, for example sex before marriage, apparently frowned on by god, also would have been a big problem for a woman to get pregrant without a husband to support her a few centuries ago, now, i think i can safely say that most young people who would consider themselves christians would ignore this. i think my rather rough and probably not original theory fits in with the more deprived nations still having a much stronger religious presence than the better developed nations.

sorry for my grammar, i put this together hastily and i never was very good at english, might add some more later. get pissed off at this post and smite me if you want, just the ponderings of a bored person.

  • they are scared

Christiantity, along with all religion, is a way to make people feel safe and have a purpose, but at the same time a way to tie them down. People are insanely afraid of having their freedom torn away from them, whn they hardly have it in the first place. Also, if someone was in a religion that does not go so well with Christianity, well, obviously come issues.

  • I'm Christian...

but I am a Catholic too, which means that to a lot of people I'm not really a Christian.

    Christians intimidate me because:

    1) A lot of them treat me like I am some kind of idol-worshiping, pope flunky.

    2) A lot of them fervently believe that I am going straight to hell. Which is odd because I've never really outwardly given anyone a reason to think that.

  • Christianity Kills

I was raised by Christians and educated in the christian mythos. But even as a child i wondered why they killed people in "crusades" and holy wars, as if a war can be holy. Aside from that, I am wary of christianity on account of its oppressive nature. I am a Neo-Pagan of the nocturnal persuasion, and happen to have a deep dark understanding of what christianity does to those they deem evil. The christian church actually turned the early pagan gods(who predate them by millinia) into thier devil symbol. Lucifer was a beautiful fallen Angel untill Pan and the Wiccan gods came into play, He then became the horned hooved and tailed creature brandishing the triton, a symbol of pagan divinity. They "christianized" all thier hollidays, killed thier leaders and forced conversions by facing the poor peiople with death or a life of hidden belief. the church then published in later years pamhlets warning agaisnt "intense immaginative thinking" "women of strong will" "free thinking women" and "the dangers of herbal medicine" all leading up to the burning years in which hundreds of innocent men, women and CHILDREN were burned, drawn and quartered or crushed because they fit the discription of these pamphlet "witches."

Fotuneately christianity cannot do that to us anymore, and many of us can speak freely now about who we are. But the pagans and wiccans are only a fraction of the people chrisianity slaughtered, forced into conversion or conquered.

Christianity has a history of violence and deciet that would make any lifer blush. They have killed before and many of us fear they will do it again. And outside the walls of the pagan community, others are still being burdened by christianity's poison.

Now, I have no quarell with Jesus. He was a humanitarian, a wise man, and he protected his women in a society that treated them terribly. It is his corrupt and power hungry followers i have the spat with. May they burn in a hell of thier own making.

I don't feel threatened by Christianity, because I know it's false. However, I do feel threatened by the people, because well, they threaten me. I think this is how it is for most non-christians too.

  • It's because...

...Christianity is a one-way or no-way religion. People don't like that. People also don't like to hear that they're sinners, or "not good enough". [Sidenote: the Bible is true based on prophesy documented on age-verified documents and by the Apostles' firsthand experience with Jesus, their testimony, and their hideous deaths in which they never turned around and said Jesus was a liar.]
